Is it good to have tomato juice; what are the benefits?
Kanikka Malhotra, consultant dietician, and diabetes educator shared that fresh tomato juice is a nutrient-dense beverage that offers various health benefits, making it a valuable addition to a diet. “It is rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, particularly lycopene, which is known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Regular consumption of tomato juice enhances heart health by lowering cholesterol levels and blood pressure, thanks to its potassium content and other beneficial compounds,” said Malhotra.
She added that tomato juice can also contribute to skin health, potentially promoting a natural glow. “The high levels of vitamin C in tomatoes support collagen production, which is essential for maintaining skin elasticity and reducing signs of ageing. Additionally, lycopene may provide some protection against UV damage, although it should not replace sunscreen. The antioxidants found in tomato juice help combat free radicals, which can lead to cellular damage and premature ageing,” said Malhotra.
Tomato juice contains vitamins A, C, K, and several B vitamins, along with minerals like potassium and magnesium. “High water content aids in hydration, especially beneficial after overnight fasting,” said Malhotra.
The fibre in tomato juice promotes healthy digestion and can alleviate constipation. “Low in calories yet filling, it can help control appetite when consumed as part of a balanced diet,” said Malhotra.
But, it must be known that tomato juice is acidic and may cause discomfort for individuals with acid reflux or sensitive stomachs. “Store-bought varieties may contain added sodium or preservatives; thus, making fresh juice at home is often healthier,” suggested Malhotra.
Incorporating fresh tomato juice into your diet can provide numerous health benefits while also contributing to a vibrant complexion. However, it’s essential to consider individual dietary needs and any potential sensitivities.
