Zaira Wasim demands ‘unconditional apology’ from Nitish Kumar as he removes a woman’s hijab: ‘Power doesn’t grant…’

Zaira Wasim, who quit films in 2019 at the age of 19 because her profession interfered with her faith, has demanded an apology from Bihar CM Nitish Kumar for pulling the hijab of a woman at a Patna event on Monday.

Dangal actor Zaira Wasim recently took to social media to express that she was “infuriated” by the actions of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, where the latter pulled off a woman’s hijab on the stage at a public event in Patna. She demanded an “unconditional apology” from Kumar, and claimed that a woman’s modesty and dignity are not “props to toy with.”

“A woman’s dignity and modesty are not props to toy with. Least of all on a public stage. As a Muslim woman, watching another woman’s niqab being pulled at so casually, accompanied by that nonchalant smile, was so infuriating,” Zaira wrote on X on Monday night. “Power does not grant permission to violate boundaries. @NitishKumar owes that woman an unconditional apology,” she added.

A newly recruited AYUSH doctor in Patna was taken aback on Monday when Chief Minister Nitish Kumar pulled the hijab (veil) off her face, while she was receiving her letter of appointment. The incident, a video clip of which has gone viral on social media, took place at ‘Samvad’, the CM’s secretariat, where appointment letters were given away to more than 1,000 AYUSH doctors.

When it was the turn of Nusrat Parveen, who had turned up wearing a hijab across her face, the 75-year-old CM frowned and exclaimed, “What is this?” The chief minister, who stood atop a raised platform, then bent down and pulled the hijab down. The flustered appointee was, thereafter, hastily pulled aside by an official present on the occasion, while Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary, who stood beside Kumar, was seen tugging at the latter’s sleeve, in an apparent bid to restrain him.

Zaira was last seen in the movies in Shonali Bose’s 2019 family drama The Sky Is Pink. She then quit the film business saying that the profession interfered with her faith.
