LAST-DITCH EFFORT

Before the BJP announced its decision to sever ties with the Shiv Sena for the Maharashtra Assembly elections, Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar decided to make one last attempt to keep the alliance intact. Javadekar had landed in the Capital in the afternoon after a 15-hour flight from the United States when he learnt of the impending break-up. He rushed to his office to clear some files before taking an evening flight to Mumbai. But, by the time he got off his flight, it was already too late.

SWACHH BHARAT

Railway Minister Sadananda Gowda has invited his Cabinet colleagues and all MPs to help clean railway stations and trains by volunteering on Gandhi Jayanti. He proposed this during Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting, which cleared the mammoth Swachh Bharat campaign. All ministers reportedly accepted Gowda’s request. On October 2, Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan will reach Bhubaneshwar station to offer help. Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad will be at Patna while Anant Kumar will be in Bangalore. Since April, the Railways has “earned” Rs 1.67 crore through fines by penalising 1.42 lakh people for littering on the premises. It is being said that the cost of the mammoth exercise on October 2 has, therefore, already been covered.

VENUE MIX-UP

The Culture Ministry was probably not aware of the launch of ‘Make in India’ campaign by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Vigyan Bhawan. A few newspapers carried advertisements by the ministry on Thursday welcoming delegates for the third Saarc meeting of Culture Ministers. The venue of the conference was shown as Vigyan Bhawan. Incidentally, by the time the advertisement appeared, one day of the two-day conference was already over. Moreover, it was being held at Ashoka Hotel, not at Vigyan Bhawan.
