Filmmaker Kiran Rao spoke about making a film about marriage while her own was ‘falling apart’. Kiran was married to actor Aamir Khan from 2005 to 2021, and is currently attending the Toronto International Film Festival, where her second feature film, Laapataa Ladies, was premiered.

In an interview with Film Companion, Kiran said that the film wouldn’t have been possible without Aamir, who discovered the script and also serves as the film’s producer. “He’s been such a great support. We wouldn’t have this film without it, because he found the script, and he offered it to me to direct, which was incredibly fortuitous for me,” she said.

Asked what it was like to make a movie about marriage while hers was ending, Kiran said with a wry smile, “A lot of the issues we’ve tackled (in the film), in some way, we’ve all experienced. I’ve been very fortunate because all my relationships have never had trauma. I’ve had very loving relationships in my life, and continue to have them. The idea was to show how, within the constructs of marriage, within socially-normative relationships, you can still find your freedom, you can still find who you are, and you can reach for something that fulfils your potential, and I’ve experienced that myself.”

She continued, “I continue to have a wonderful relationship with my producer and ex-husband. I continue to be supported by both my family and Aamir’s, so I feel that it’s all possible, and this film wants to convey that, and not make you throw out the baby with the bathwater. Society and relationships are very important to both… to all of us.” Kiran said that she has been able to drown out everything that is said about her on public platforms because she stays away from social media, and she also makes sure to keep her feet on the ground, which means doing regular things like buying groceries.

Kiran made her directorial debut with Dhobi Ghat, which was released in 2011. She has also produced films such as Delhi Belly, Secret Superstar, Dangal, and Laal Singh Chaddha.
