Pune-based director Sumit Pofale attempts a record by making his film,Mayecha Sparsh in 16:35 hours
Log on to http://www.dreamobama.com,and you’ll see a proud declaration on the home page from the makers of Dream Obama about how they made the film in just nine days,17 hours,45 minutes and 00 seconds a world record of the shortest time taken to make a film. For the past two years,Pune-based filmmaker Sumit Pofale has been reading about similar records in filmmaking, and decided to create one for himself. It made me think,if they can do it,why cant we? Hence I decided to give it a try, said Pofale, who shot a full-length Marathi feature film,Mayecha Sparsh,in 16:35 hours at a stretch on August 16.
Pofale first attempted a short Marathi film Ti Vel ,which was shot in 23 hours in 2010. This gave my team and me the confidence we needed to start Mayecha Sparsh, says the director, who has also made films like Aailare,Baba Lagin and Gharaacha Abhyaas.
Since he had the story of Mayecha Sparsh four years back,he didn’t waste time deciding the script and diverted his focus to the bigger challenge that lay ahead. The film needed three songs and more than 60 shots in 15 different locations. The time and manpower management with creative team, the director says, was utilised as per some well-thought practical calculations. “We realised that on an average, one film needs a crew of 75-90 persons per day to shoot three-four scenes. We manipulated this figure by dividing the hours as per our manpower, says the director. There were around 170 creative technicians and more than 100 artistes including established Marathi film and theatre actors such as Sunil Tawade,Shailesh Pitambare,Preeti Bhashme and Chetan Chawda.
The film is a story of three generations of one family and how they grapple with the modern lifestyles. The parents, being working professionals, are not able to devote time to their daughter, who is a teenager and is going through a difficult emotional and physical phase. Though the grandparents try to convince the parents to spend time with the girl, the parents are too busy. Then the grandfather comes up with a plan. The girl goes missing one day and is found by the police in a red light area. This is followed by a number of interesting twists and turns in the story, says the director about Mayecha Sparsh, which releases in October.
From spot boys,to technicians to actors, everyone was ready to pitch in for all the departments. We did have a few retakes but that did not stop us. The whole crew was extremely energetic to work towards the same goal, says Pofale.
