‘Engineer-officers have dual responsibility’

Engineer-officers face a bigger challenge than their civilian counterparts as they have to play “a dual role of being competent engineers and equally good,if not better,soldiers,” Armed Forces Engineer-in-Chief Lt Gen Gautam Dutt said here on Wednesday.

Addressing engineer officers during the scroll presentation ceremony at the College of Military Engineering (CME),Dutt said,“You will be entrusted with the responsibility of providing the Armed Forces with the technical expertise and skills required by the tri-services to perform their assigned duties in ensuring the security of the nation.”

“Apart from combat engineering support,you will be called upon to offer the infrastructure need to keep the country’s Armed Forces in a constant state of operational readiness. This will include roads,airfields,hospitals,docks,harbours,accommodation,ammunition storage facilities and so on,” he said.

Earlier,Dutt awarded B.Tech degree to 72 student officers of the 98th engineer officers degree engineering (EODE) course.

As many as 39 officers,including three from Maldives,two from Sri Lanka and one from Nepal,were conferred degrees in the civil engineering branch,while 13 officers from the electrical engineering branch also graduated. In the Technical Entry Scheme (TES) 11th Course,25 officers from the mechanical engineering course received their degrees.

Maj Varun Dikshit (civil engineering) and Maj Saleem Aijaz (electrical engineering) were awarded the gold medal in the EODE course for standing first in their respective disciplines. Lt Rahul Yadav,who came first in mechanical engineering,bagged the gold medal in the TES course.
