Ganguly emerges champ

Surya Shekhar Ganguly (ELO 2625) of IOC,with 7.5 points,emerged as the individual champion of the XXIII PSPB Inter-Unit Chess Tournament,being hosted by Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (HPCL),at the HP Nagar Housing Complex Club in Chembur on Wednesday.

Former National champion and Grand Master Surya Shekhar Ganguly (ELO 2625) of IOC,with 7.5 points,emerged as the individual champion of the XXIII PSPB Inter-Unit Chess Tournament,being hosted by Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (HPCL),at the HP Nagar Housing Complex Club in Chembur on Wednesday. Ganguly was followed by top seed and GM K Sasikiran (ELO 2589) of ONGC with 6.5 points. The third spot was bagged by IM Venkatesh M.R of BPCL (ELO 2499),with 6 points.

After defeating K Sasikiran in the sixth and penultimate round,Ganguly accounted for teammate IM Shyam Sundar in the final round to clinch the title. Ganguly,with black pieces,used 2 knight defence against his,Shyam Sundar,ELO (2462). Both players castled king side and Shyam Sundar kept pressure on the black pieces as Gangulys bishop on G7 was inactive. At the end Ganguly used his rook and bishop,winning few white pawns. As Shyam Sundar was losing points,he conceded defeat in 40 moves.

Top seed K. Sasikiran won his final round game against I M Venkatesh M R of BPCL. GM Abhijit Kunte of IOC,ended both the rounds in a draw,finishing with 5.5 points.

Third placed Venkatesh M R defeated G M Parimarjan Negi ELO (2617) of BPCL and also IM Lalith Babu of IOC ELO (2484) in rounds 6 and 7 respectively.

The best unrated player of the tournament award went to Girish Nayak of MRPL and Baruah PJ in the individual category,while in the team event the best unrated team award went to IOCL AOD,while the runners up were HPCL A.
