Prakash Jha talks about genesis of Rajneeti

Our ears would fall if we heard one more time about the film bearing no resemblance with anyone from the First Family of Indian politics,so,we begin with asking Prakash Jha,director of soon to be released film Rajneeti, about the genesis of the concept.

“The idea of making this film came to me around the time I made Apharan and Gangaajal,” said Jha,in the city on a film promotional tour, along with members of the cast,Ajay Devgan,Katrina Kaif and Manoj Bajpai. “This film is as political per se as any other because politics is ubiquitous…it is there in a wife haggling a deal with her husband,or a man finding a way with his wanton son. There is more to the film than just politics,” the director summed up.

“My role in the film, against the common perception,is pretty glamorous, that of a spoilt brat from a rich family,” said Katrina Kaif, adding to elaborate on her reason to do the film with “I agree with people when they say I have been typecast doing the romance-comedy stuff. I loved the character that I play and decided that this film would give the much needed break to me and my fans.”

As for her mannerisms resembling the most powerful political women of the country, she said her act was a synthesis of the observation of a number of women politicians, contemporary as well as of the past.

“I had spoken to all the actors about their roles and Ajay was the last I spoke to,probably because of the long association we have,” said Jha about the actor who played the protagonist in his earlier films and for whose production house he even directed the not so successful Dil Kya Kare.

“I know nothing about politics even after having done a thoroughly researched film like this. But I feel you and I could make the difference if we chose our leaders wisely and ensured that only the fair players entered the arena,” said Devgan.

“My character is on the lines of Duryodhan of Mahabharat. But the shades in the character were a challenge I have tried to meet,” said Manoj Bajpai about his character, even as he highlighted the common Bihar roots he shares with the director and how proud people back home were of their individual achievements.

The film is due for release on June 4.
