CU gives 13 days to complete

Students of the Calcutta University will appear for their final year graduation examination just 13 days after qualifying the second year’s examination.

Students of the Calcutta University (CU) will appear for their final year graduation examination just 13 days after qualifying the second year’s examination.

On April 7, when the university declared the results of the review examination of second year students, nearly 38 of them passed. Now,many of these students are preparing to appear in final year examination slated for April 20.

These students had neither attended any classes nor were aware of appearing in the final year examination, till a few weeks ago However, the university authorities are still in a fix. They do not want action should be taken. “Even if we had published the review results by March 20,what difference would it have made? The students would still not be able to attend any classes,” said Debasish Biswas,Deputy Controller of Examination,CU.

The authorities described it as an “academic fallacy”. They said a consensus should be arrived at among the colleges, students and the university so that the students don’t have to appear in the examination without attending any classes.

The Part I and Part II results were declared on November 26,2008,in which all these 38 students were declared failed. After the declaration of results the university gave one month time for the students to apply for re-check of the answer scripts and the results were declared on April 7 while the final year examination was scheduled for April 20.

“It is a pity that students are being deprived of their allocated number of classes in one academic session,” said a professor of anthropology from a reputed city college. According to him there is a one-month field work in anthropology which is compulsory for students before appearing in the examination and the students are left with a more limited time for their lessons.

The same is the case with various practical-based science subjects. This year the practical examination started in the middle of March and will be over by April 17.

According to senior officials of the CU,a college loses about 80 days in examination and answer-scripts correction process, along with one month of Puja vacation. Then there are 52 Sundays and other holidays which takes the count of holidays to about 200. This means that in the entire academic calendar of the university, students usually get not more than 160 days for attending their classes.
