GSRTC blames state govt for levying toll tax on passengers
AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC),which has drawn flak for announcing fare hike for the second time in three weeks, has sought permission to justify it. Officials said that as per National Highway Rules,1997,it is allowed to levy such toll tax on passengers.
A GSRTC release issued on Wednesday said that only 2.6 lakh passengers in 6,500 trips,of the 25 lakh passengers making 38,000 trips daily, would be affected by the taxes.
It said the GSRTC was constrained to levy the toll tax only after the state government had declined its pleas for exemption. The release said the GSRTC was suffering additional daily spending of Rs 6.35 lakh on account of payment of toll tax to the government, amounting to Rs 23 crore a year.
Against the GSRTC demand to levy of Rs 4 as toll tax per passenger per toll both, the state government allowed only Re 1,which would mean that only 25 per cent of the GSRTC spending would stand reimbursed, the release said. Sources said toll tax will not be levied on students. There are 49 toll booths in Gujarat,17 in Maharashtra,11 in Rajasthan and one in Madhya Pradesh.
