TOP-LEVEL CHANGES DELAY EPF DECISION

The EPFO was hoping to have an early decision on the rate of interest on Provident Fund contributions for 2013-14. But with the new Central provident fund commissioner

KK Jalan taking charge on Thursday,chances of the Central Board of Trustees (CBT) meeting to finalise the interest rate anytime soon have dissolved. The CBT was earlier tentatively scheduled to meet in July,but now Jalan would need at least a month to settle in before the meeting can be called.

Large Indian business delegations from the two industry chambers CII and Ficci have travelled this month to St Petersburg in Russia and to Spain,the United Kingdom and

Ireland this month. Not surprising considering the weather in India at this time of the year. The one common factor from the government with all these delegations has been commerce and industries minister Anand Sharma. In between of course there was a much needed first visit to Myanmar. One supposes the export figures from the country will soon start responding.

While the resistance by government employees to checks of any kind is widely known,it touched a new level at the ministry of road transport and highways. A biometric device installed to mark

attendance on the fifth floor of the building that houses the ministry,was severely damaged,allegedly by staff members averse to punching in daily,forcing the ministry to cover the device with an iron grill. Interestingly,that floor also houses the office of the road transport minister.
