Actor Deepika Padukone, who welcomed her first child Dua with husband Ranveer Singh in September 2024, is candidly embracing the joys—and the complexities—of new motherhood. At the WAVES 2025 summit in Mumbai, where she joined Shah Rukh Khan for a session on Day 1, Deepika opened up about how her life has transformed since becoming a parent.

“I’m discovering this new life post-embracing motherhood,” Deepika shared. “The minute you’ve had a child, you’re now responsible for another human being, and especially in the way I’ve led my life, it’s been so much about me — leaving home, my ambition, my career, and everything has been about my life and everything that I wanted for myself. And now, suddenly, you’re caring for this person who is dependent on you for everything.”

She admitted that while enjoying every bit of motherhood, she’s still figuring out how to balance this new role. “That person comes before you. I don’t think I’ve found the answer to that yet,” she added.

Shah Rukh Khan, who has shared the screen with Deepika in multiple films, didn’t hold back his admiration. “I think the role she’s going to play the best, Inshallah, is that of a mother now with Dua,” he said warmly. “I think she’s really going to be a wonderful mother.”

Deepika and Ranveer, who married in 2018, introduced their daughter Dua Padukone Singh to the world during Diwali last year. In a touching note, they explained the meaning behind her name: “Dua: meaning a prayer. Because she is the answer to our prayers. Our hearts are filled with love and gratitude.”

While the birth of a baby brings immense joy, the postpartum period also presents challenges—especially for first-time mothers. According to Dr Chetna Jain, Director of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, Gurgaon, the first few weeks after childbirth are often physically and emotionally demanding.

“It’s essential that mothers receive the support and care they need—not only for their well-being but also to foster a healthy start for their babies,” Dr Jain told indianexpress.com. “Unfortunately, as the focus often shifts entirely to the newborn, new mothers can sometimes feel neglected or overwhelmed.”

Dr Jain emphasised that rest is vital for healing. She suggests that new mothers nap when their babies sleep and create a calm environment to promote better-quality rest. “Asking for help isn’t a weakness; it’s a crucial part of recovery.”
