Goa Carnival attracts tourists in large number

Panji, Feb 08 (ANI): A colourful carnival drew hundreds of tourists in Panaji city. International and local artists mersmerised people with their performances and paraded on the streets. Goa Tourism Minister Dilip Parulekar said Goa has invited 12 artists from the U.K. and South Africa for the four-day long carnival. Colourful tableaus were paraded on the streets on the third day of the carnival, depicting the cultural heritage of Goa and the influence of Portuguese culture. Local and international tourists alike enjoyed the carnival, hoping to witness more in the coming days. The carnival, which will end on Tuesday, marks merriment and precedes the 40 days of Lent observed before Easter.

New Delhi, Jan 09 (ANI): While addressing the Pravasi Bhartiya Diwas on Saturday, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said that the day is dedicated to overseas Indians. Explaining about the day, Swaraj said in the year 2003, under the leadership of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, a decision was taken to celebrate Pravasi Bhartiya Diwas on January 9. She further stated that the reason behind selecting January 9 for Pravasi Bhartiya Diwas was that Mahatma Gandhi had returned from South Africa on this day in 1915 and this day is being celebrated across the world.
