Patanjali
Patanjali, also known as Patanjali Ayurved, is a multinational conglomerate holding company founded by Swami Ramdev and his close aide Balkrishna in 2006. The company manufactures cosmetics, ayurvedic medicine, personal care, and food products.
The company's growth has been nothing short of meteoric. In just over a decade, Patanjali Ayurved has become one of the largest FMCG companies in India, with a turnover of over ₹45,000 crore in 2022-23. The Patanjali Group has set an ambitious target of crossing annual revenue of Rs 1 lakh crore by 2028. The Haridwar-based ayurveda major that disrupted the country’s fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) space with its herbal-natural products has already crossed Rs 45,000 crore yearly revenue mark in 2023.
Patanjali's success is a testament to its shrewd business strategy. The company has capitalized on the growing popularity of Ayurveda in India and has successfully positioned its products as authentic and affordable alternatives to multinational brands. Patanjali has also been able to leverage its strong brand image and the popularity of Baba Ramdev to its advantage. The company's products are often endorsed by Ramdev himself, and his reputation as a yoga guru has helped to boost consumer trust in the brand.
Patanjali's success has not been without its challenges. The company has faced criticism for its marketing practices and the quality of its products. Some have also questioned the organization's use of Baba Ramdev's image to promote its products.
On November 21, 2023, the Supreme Court cautioned Patanjali Ayurved against making “false” and “misleading” claims in advertisements about its medicines as cure of several diseases.
“All such false and misleading advertisements of Patanjali Ayurved have to stop immediately. The court will take any such infraction very seriously…,” a bench comprising justices Ahsanuddin Amanullah and Prashant Kumar Mishra orally observed while hearing a plea of the Indian Medical Association (IMA).
The top court, on August 23, 2022, had issued notices to the Union Health Ministry and Ministry of Ayush and Patanjali Ayurved Ltd, on the plea of the IMA alleging a smear campaign by Ramdev against the vaccination drive and modern medicines.
During the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, Ramdev had launched an ayurvedic ‘Corona Kit’ claiming it cured Covid-19 and the claim led to serious questions over the business practices of Patanjali Ayurved Ltd.
