A man and his seven-year-old daughter on a motorcycle died in Gujarat after they allegedly got entangled in a nylon kite string and fell from a flyover in Surat on Wednesday evening, the police said.

According to the police, the accident occurred when the man identified as Rehan Shaikh, 35, a resident of Saiyedpura in Surat, was crossing the Chandra Shekhar Azad bridge (also known as Jilani bridge), while on his way to Subhash Garden at Morabhagal, on his bike along with his wife Rehana, 30, and their daughter Alisha.

The Rander police said that when Rehan came into contact with the kite string, he used one hand to remove the string, while controlling his bike with the other. During the process, he lost control of the vehicle that was moving at a high speed, and the bike hit the bridge’s outer railing, throwing him and his daughter 70 feet off to the ground.

Rehan and Alisha died on the spot, while Rehana, who fell on a parked auto-rickshaw, is in a critical condition, the police said.

H N Parmar, sub-inspector, Rander police, said, “Rehan works in a private firm, and as it was a holiday due to Uttarayan festival, he was on his way to a garden at Morabhagal with his family on his bike and met with an accident. We have taken statements from the eyewitness. His wife is still in critical condition and under medical treatment.”

The Rander police have shifted the bodies to the New Civil Hospital for post-mortem. They have registered a case of accidental death and started a probe
