Mira Kapoor does needle therapy (Photo: Mira Kapoor/Instagram/Instagram Stories)
Mira Kapoor recently shared a glimpse of undertaking “painless” needle therapy, a cosmetic acupuncture session. “I have got some needles on my face, stomach, arms, and feet. It is painless. See, I can talk to you. That’s how easy and pleasant the experience is. So, we are working on the kidney system, liver, to detox the entire body and certain parts of the face to lift the face and depuff,” the entrepreneur said on Instagram Stories.
Kapoor captioned the video, “Acupuncture needles are the only needles I do.”
What exactly is it?
Dr Shweta Nakhawa, consultant dermatologist, KIMS Hospital, Thane, described cosmetic acupuncture as a non-invasive technique adapted from traditional acupuncture. “Very fine needles are placed at specific points on the face and sometimes the body. In dermatology and wellness practices, it is commonly used to improve circulation, reduce facial puffiness, and support skin health. Unlike injectables or fillers, it does not add volume. Instead, it stimulates the body’s natural healing response,” said Dr Nakhawa.
Is cosmetic acupuncture really painless, as claimed?
Some may feel mild tingling, warmth, or pressure at certain points. “Overall, the experience is usually described as comfortable and relaxing. However, individual sensitivity can vary,” said Dr Nakhawa.

Can acupuncture actually ‘detox’ the body by working on organs like the liver or kidneys?
From a medical perspective, Dr Nakhawa asserted that detoxification is a continuous process carried out by organs such as the liver and kidneys. “Acupuncture does not detox the body in a literal or biochemical sense. That said, it may help reduce stress, improve sleep quality, and support circulation, contributing to a general sense of well-being, which is often seen as a detox effect,” said Dr Nakhawa.
Does facial acupuncture really lift the face or reduce puffiness?
Facial acupuncture may help improve lymphatic drainage and muscle tone, temporarily reducing puffiness and making the face look refreshed. “Any lifting effect is usually subtle and short-term. It should not be seen as an alternative to medical or surgical cosmetic procedures but rather a supportive method that aids in maintenance.”
Who is an ideal candidate for cosmetic acupuncture?
It may be suitable for people with mild facial puffiness, early signs of ageing, dull skin, or those seeking non-invasive, wellness-focused treatments. “However, individuals with bleeding disorders, active skin infections, or those on blood-thinning medications should get medical advice before deciding on the procedure,” said Dr Nakhawa.
It is important to consult a trained and qualified practitioner, maintain realistic expectations, and view cosmetic acupuncture as a complementary therapy rather than a standalone cosmetic solution.
