The multi-corner tussle for the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), voting for which was underway Thursday morning, is mainly between the BJP and the alliance of the two Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) factions.

The Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) came together ahead of the polls and fielded their candidates, while the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) went solo.

The United NCP controlled politics in the PMC till 2017, after which the BJP single-handedly wrested power, leading to a contest between the two to prove their supremacy in every election thereafter.

The civic election has gained importance in the current political landscape following the 2024 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. Each political party, regardless of its alliance, is trying to strengthen its base and gain control of local bodies.

The PMC election became more intriguing after the Ajit Pawar-led NCP formed a pre-poll alliance with the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP). This collaboration aims to present a strong challenge to the BJP, which has been expanding its influence in Pune, the Pawar family’s home city.

The NCP alliance has promised free PMPML bus and Metro travel. On this, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis previously said, “I do not want to criticise anyone, but they are giving assurances without any guarantee of fulfilling them.”

In reply, Ajit Pawar said, “Those raising doubts over the promise should recall who Ajit Pawar is, with the vast experience of handling the state finance ministry. They are not worried about its economics but fear losing political control in Pune.”

The BJP campaign, led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, sought votes for city development while taking on the NCP-NCP (SP) alliance for fielding candidates with criminal backgrounds and for making assurances of free travel for citizens on the Pune metro and public transport buses.

The NCP front, led by Deputy CM Ajit Pawar, was critical of the BJP for failing to deliver on development during the previous terms. However, through his election manifesto, which promised a slew of benefits if brought to power, he disturbed the leaders of the rival BJP.

On the other hand, Congress-Shiv Sena (UBT) and the MNS took the line that voting for the NCP is effectively voting for the BJP, since both were in alliance at the state and national levels.

The Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena campaign, led by Deputy CM Eknath Shinde, criticised the BJP for under-rating their party by offering very few seats in a pre-poll alliance, which led the Sena to go it alone in the polls.

Voting is on until 5.30 pm to elect 165 corporators from 41 wards, four each from 40 wards and five from a single ward. The vote count will be held on Friday in a decentralised manner, with the results to be declared by the PMC.
