A day after Press Council of India chairman Markandey Katju urged the Maharashtra Governor to pardon film star Sanjay Dutt, sentenced to five years jail by the Supreme Court in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case, the UPA government Friday said that Katjus request would be dealt with and an appropriate decision taken once such a plea is made by the actor.
Among other extenuating circumstances cited by Katju for seeking Governors pardon for Dutt are that since 1993,the actor has through his film revived the memory of Mahatma Gandhi…. He also said,During this period Sanjay suffered a lot,and had a cloud hovering over his head throughout. He had to undergo various tribulations and indignities during this period. He had to go to court often… take permission of the court for foreign shootings,he could not get bank loans, etc.
Asked about Katjus demand,Union Law Minister Ashwani Kumar said,The Governor will use his discretionary power when there will be an appeal to him. He has the power to pardon. We should not comment on it.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari said the authorities would take cognizance of the matter at the appropriate time. Justice Katju has been a very eminent judge of the Supreme Court. Whenever he articulates a position on an issue, people both inside and outside the government listen to it carefully, he told reporters.
The minister, however, added,But there are various aspects to the issue and I am sure that those people within government whether at the state government or level of various other instrumentalities of government, who are seized with the responsibility of dealing with the issue, take cognizance of the statement and then,if required, formulate an appropriate response and then come back.
