Opposition MPs staged a walkout of Lok Sabha after Union Home Mnister Amit Shah concluded his address. In his blistering attack, Shah said the Opposition raised the issue of SIR to keep illegal immigrants in voter lists.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah came up with vote chori allegations against the Congress. He said, "Post Independence, Sardar Patel was backed by 28 persons, J L Nehru by two persons; yet Nehru became PM, this was vote chori." Pointing out second vote chori, Shah said, it was by Indira Gandhi, when she granted herself immunity after court set aside her election. Dispute of third "vote chori" has just reached civil courts on how Sonia Gandhi became a voter before becoming citizen of India, said Amit Shah.
Soon after Shah claimed vote chori by Sonia Gandhi, KC Venugopal argued that the case was dismissed by the court and said Sonia Gandhi never cast her vote.
EVMs were used for first time in 2004 and then in 2009, Congress won both polls, but they started complaining only after 2014 loss, says Amit Shah
Opposition worried because they can no longer run away with ballot boxes and win elections by corrupt practices, says Amit Shah
Responding to Rahul Gandhi's allegation that election dates are set as per Prime Minister Narendra Modi's schedule, Amit Shah says Modi is very busy every day that he does not even take a day off.
If electoral rolls were corrupted, why did you contest elections, asks Amit Shah. Shah said, "BJP has lost more elections than it has won, but we never questioned Election Commission."
Tracing history, Amit Shah asks who brought EVM to the country and points to Rajiv Gandhi era.
Opposition parties' actions have tarnished the image of EC, not the government, across the world, says Amit Shah in LS.
When you win elections, EC is great; when you lose, EC is incompetent, such double standards will not work: Amit Shah says in Lok Sabha.
Leader of Opposition flagged irregularities in electoral rolls, SIR is an exercise to have pure electoral rolls, says Amit Shah in Lok Sabha
As Amit Shah addresses the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi intervenes and challenges Home Minister to debate on his three press conferences
Opposition worried as people of country do not vote for them and SIR will delete names of illegal immigrants who back them: Amit Shah
Should illegal immigrants participate in elections in India, asks Amit Shah in Lok Sabha on opposition to SIR of electoral rolls
Amit Shah rebuffs Rahul Gandhi's "vote chori" allegations claiming those to be an attempt to create a fake narrative.
EC has full mandate to prepare clean electoral rolls under Article 326 of the Constitution, says Amit Shah in Lok Sabha
Taking a dig at the Congress, Shah said the Opposition gets angry when history is invoked. He said the most past SIRs were conducted during Congress rule.
Impression was created that govt was not ready for debate, but BJP-led NDA never shies away from debate:Home Minister Amit Shah
Union Home Minister Amit Shah addresses Lok Sabha on electoral reforms. Taking a dig at the Congress, Shah said lies have been spread and there were attempts to manipulate people in the country. Even though the topic of discussion is electoral reforms, many Opposition MPs are discussing SIR.
Two senior leaders of the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress in the Lower House debated whether the panel to select the chief election commissioner and election commissioners has the Chief Justice of India as a member. Congress MP K C Venugopal questioned the government on excluding the CJI from the election committee to appoint CEC and fellow ECs. In response, senior BJP leader and former Union law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said that when an elected government headed by the prime minister can be trusted with the nuclear button, why can’t it be the case when selecting a good CEC or EC.
Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan on Wednesday demanded dedicated emergency lanes on roads for ambulance movement, saying that in India, groceries reach doorsteps in under 15 minutes, pizzas in 30 minutes, but patients bleed to death due to the delay in reaching the hospital.
Raising the issue during the Zero Hour in Rajya Sabha, Bachchan demanded that the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health should also look into the issue of patient death due to the delay in reaching the hospital.
"In a country where groceries reach doorsteps in under 15 minutes, pizzas in 30 minutes via quick commerce platforms, patients bleed to death because ambulances get trapped in traffic, lacking dedicated emergency lanes, despite the Supreme Court's 2018 directive. No national data tracks these tragedies," Bachchan said.
"60 per cent of ambulances arrive late, with urban delays averaging 15 to 30 minutes due to an absence of green corridors and police escorts, missing the golden hour for 55 per cent of accident victims. No dedicated lanes on highways, despite the National Ambulance Code 2016. These critical failures need to be taken notice of and dealt with immediately," she stated.
She suggested an immediate nationwide mandate for dedicated emergency lanes, with AI traffic signals, prioritizing ambulances, 30-second green corridors, enforcing the Supreme Court's 2018 ambulance corridor directive via Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, penalties on violators, and a high-level probe into ambulance delay deaths.
BJP MP Rekha Sharma demanded a gender-sensitive mental health facility for traumatised women in the country.
She drew attention towards the severe shortage of accessible gender sensitive mental health support, particularly for survivors of violence, harassment and trauma.
While the Modi government's initiatives, such as Tele Manas and district mental health programmes, are commendable, some gaps persist, especially in rural, marginalised, and low-income communities, she said, adding that lack of awareness and scarcity of trained professionals prevent countless women from receiving timely care.
Survivors of domestic violence, cyber harassment, acid attacks, trafficking and workplace abuse frequently carry long-lasting psychological scars, she told the House.
The mental health system that should support them remains fragmented and under-resourced, she pointed out.
She urged the government to deploy dedicated women's mental health counsellors at centres, police stations, and hospitals, ensuring immediate and specialised assistance. Tele Manas outreach should be expanded and integrated with women's helpline, self-help groups, and Anganwari worker network, she said.

Amid a push by opposition parties to revert to paper ballot elections, senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad on Wednesday hit back, saying it would mean going back to the days of booth capturing.
Participating in a debate in Lok Sabha on 'election reforms', the former Union law minister said the opposition should not talk of returning to the old ballot paper system. There are at least two dozen Supreme Court and high court judgments validating the use of electronic voting machines (EVMs), he said.
Prasad recalled that the Election Commission had invited parties to hack EVMs in its presence, but none turned up. "Now they are raising a hue and cry (against EVMs)," he said. Prasad also noted that after the recent Bihar elections, "not one plea" was received to check the micro-controllers of EVMs.
To boost voters' confidence, a mandatory verification of voter verifiable paper audit trails unit (VVPAT) slips was held for five randomly-selected polling stations per assembly constituency, but no discrepancy was found with the EVM count anywhere in Bihar, he said.
The government has repeatedly ruled out going back to the ballot paper system as EVMs have made the election process faster and safer, Prasad said.

Parliament Winter Session 2025 Live Updates: Home Minister Amit Shah to speak on the Election Reforms in Lok Sabha around 5 pm today.
Parliament Winter Session 2025 Live Updates: Speaking on the need for electoral reforms in the Lok Sabha Tuesday, Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi accused the RSS and the BJP of trying to attack the right to vote, which he said was an “anti-national” act, adding, “We will change the law retrospectively, and we will come looking for you.”
He spelled out what he felt were necessary elements of electoral reform, and accused the Election Commission of India (ECI) of not responding to any concern raised by the Opposition. He said the ECI had been “captured” by the regime.
Meanwhile, the BJP and its allies on Tuesday mounted a defence of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls during a discussion in the Lok Sabha on electoral reforms, even as they avoided directly shielding the Election Commission (EC) that is currently facing sustained Opposition criticism.

BJP MP Nishikant Dubey hit out at Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday over his attack on EVMs, saying the voting machines were introduced in the country by his father, late Rajiv Gandhi, during a pilot project in 1987.
Participating in a discussion on election reforms in the Lower House of Parliament, the Godda (Jharkhand) MP said how can Gandhi claim that the Election Commission (EC) is colluding with those in power to shape elections when the Congress has historically rewarded those who were at the helm of affairs at the poll body.
"All opposition parties spoke about EVMs.... I want to tell the House that the EVMs were first introduced by the Congress. (Former prime minister) Rajiv Gandhi had brought EVMs as part of a pilot project in 1987 and then, in 1991, the Narasimha Rao government introduced the electronic machines for voting," he said.
“Eastern India will become the engine of growth for the country under PM Modi’s leadership,” says JD(U) MP Sanjay Jha in the Rajya Sabha during the Vande Mataram debate.
BJP MP Nishikant Dubey said, “Congress has tarnished the Constitution of India; Indira Gandhi won Raebareli by ‘vote chori’ (vote theft). We are proud to be from the RSS.”
Criticising the NDA, Gandhi asked why Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah are keen on who gets selected as the Election Commissioner. Further, he said the election campaigns are tailored in such a way that they cater to the Prime Minister of the country.
There is institutional capture of EC that directly controls election system of our country, says Rahul Gandhi in Lok Sabha.
Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi says: “Everybody knows how VCs of universities are selected. It does not matter whether the professor has qualifications or a scientific temper”. Taking a veiled dig at the RSS, Rahul said the selection of Vice Chancellors in Universities depends on whether the person belongs to a particular organisation.
“Have you ever wondered why Mahatma Gandhi placed such emphasis on Khadi? Why did he lead the freedom struggle around the concept of Khadi? Why did he only wear Khadi? It is not just a cloth, it is the expression of the people of India," says Gandhi.
Everybody knows how VCs of universities are selected. It does not matter whether the professor has qualifications or a scientific temper, says Rahul Gandhi.
Following the statement, MPs raise objections.
Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi is currently addressing the Lok Sabha on electoral reforms. Gandhi said the RSS attempted to capture one institution after another. “After the assassination of Gandhi, the next step of the project was to capture the institutional framework of the country,” Gandhi said.

Giving a major jolt to Maoists, the security forces have neutralised 29 top Naxal leaders since 2019, with 14 Central Committee Members (CCM) and Politburo members (PBM) killed this year alone, Lok Sabha was informed on Tuesday.
Responding to a supplementary during the Question Hour, Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said the number of effected states have gone down from 10 in 2014 to 5 in 2025 (till October) showing a reduction of 50 per cent while the number of districts affected by Left Wing Extremism (LWE) has witnessed a sharp decline of 91 per cent from 126 to 11 during the period.
He said the number of districts affected by left-wing extremism has decreased from 126 in April 2018 to 90 in July 2021, 70 in April 2024, 38 in April 2025, and further to 11 in October 2025, with only three districts now considered to be the "most affected" by left-wing extremism.
"However, to prevent the CPI (Maoist) from re-establishing itself in areas recently freed from the influence of left-wing extremism, 27 districts have been included under the Security Related Expenditure (SRE) scheme as 'Legacy and Thrust Districts'," the Minister said.
He said under the leadership of the Prime Minister and the successful guidance of the Home Minister, left-wing extremism will be "eradicated by March 2026 and there is no escape for them now".
"Previous governments considered left-wing extremism a state problem, due to which the central government did not formulate any concrete policy against it. But the Modi government has formulated a comprehensive and effective policy against left-wing extremism, where the central government has resolved to eliminate it. This campaign is being made successful in collaboration with the state governments," he said.
Underlining the outcome of the zero-tolerance policy of the central government against Naxals, Rai said that from the highest level of Maoist violence witnessed in 2010, the incidents have seen a massive decline of 81 per cent in 2024.
The minister said Maoist violence had resulted in 6,508 deaths from 2004 to 2014 (till May that year), which included 4,684 civilians and 1,824 security personnel.
Rai said in the following decade, between 2015 and 25 (till May), the number of deaths dropped by 71 per cent to 1,868, which included 1,404 civilians and 464 security personnel. He said 44 deaths have been reported between May and November this year.

A parliamentary panel has pulled up the Tribal Affairs Ministry over delays in setting up tribal freedom fighters' museums and Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS), warning that the absence of clear timelines and preconditions for states could lead to further cost escalation and defeat the purpose of flagship schemes.

The division of 'Vande Mataram' song for "politics of appeasement" led to partition of India, Home Minister Amit Shah said in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, as he slammed Opposition for linking the debate on 150 years of the national song with the upcoming West Bengal elections.

The Election Commission has no legal basis to conduct the SIR and it must be stopped, Congress MP Manish Tewari said on Tuesday and made a slew of suggestions for election reforms, including either mandating a 100 per cent counting of VVPAT slips or reverting to paper ballots.
Initiating the discussion on Election Reforms in the Lok Sabha, Tewari also called for disallowing direct cash transfers to people ahead of polls and adding two members -- the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha and the Chief Justice of India -- to the existing three-member panel to select the chief election commissioner and the two election commissioners. — PTI

Samajwali Party leader Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday alleged that the process of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is being conducted in disguise of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR).
Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Yadav said, "Even Aadhar's biometric details aren't been considered for SIR. This means the process is NRC in disguise... The UP CM said that they are making detention centres. Why do you need detention centres for those who are not on the SIR? They couldn't do this work openly, so they are doing it under the guise of SIR."
Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday agreed to the Congress’ demands for amending the law on the selection of the chief election commissioner and election commissioners, to make it more transparent.
Yadav said this in agreement with Congress MP Manish Tewari's suggestion of including the Leader of Opposition in the Upper House and the Chief Justice of India on the selection panel.
Tewari had said, "It is my suggestion that two members should be added to this panel -- the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha and the Chief Justice of India."
He said the law stipulates that the panel be comprised of the prime minister, the leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha and a cabinet minister.
Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday agreed to the Congress' demands of holding elections via ballot papers.
Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Yadav said, "In Germany, EVM votes are considered Unconstitutional. If technologically advanced nations like Germany are rejecting EVMs, why are we still conducting elections using this."
"We need reform to fix something that is deformed. How did our election process get disrupted?... Today, the election process is disrupted because of internal issues in the electoral body," Yadav added.
No airline, however large, will be permitted to cause hardship to passengers through planning failures and non-compliance with regulations, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu said on Tuesday on the mass disruptions in IndiGo flight schedules.
Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Naidu said "strict and appropriate action will be taken" against IndiGo for the flight disruptions that have affected passengers across the country, adding that the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has already issued notices to IndiGo and that the airline is being held fully accountable for the chaos caused by its internal crew-rostering failures.
Naidu said IndiGo flight schedules are stabilising and all other airlines continue to operate smoothly across the country, PTI quoted.
"IndiGo was ordered to issue refunds promptly and more than Rs 750 crore has already reached passengers," the minister said.
"Refunds, baggage tracing and passenger support measures remain under the supervision of the ministry. Directorate General of Civil Aviation has issued show-cause notices to IndiGo's senior leadership and commenced a detailed enforcement investigation," Naidu said.
Naidu said the government is determined to build a robust and competitive aviation ecosystem. "Through our policies, we are encouraging more new airlines to start and operate in India," he said, adding "Safety in civil aviation is completely non-negotiable."

Congress leader Manish Tewari, speaking on the electoral reforms in Lok Sabha on Tuesday raised the question of the authority of the source code for the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).
"I am not saying that EVMs are being manipulated, but the public is concerned that EVMs could be manipulated....Till today, I have not received a response to my question - Who has the source code for the EVMs?...," Tewari said in his speech.
Congress leader Manish Tewari, speaking on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Lok Sabha, on Tuesday said that there is no provision in law to conduct the SIR.
"Stop SIR. There is no provision in law to conduct SIR... With regards to the claims of SIR being conducted earlier, multiple wrongs don't make a right. If someone did not spot the wrong and the law then, it doesn't mean that the same should be allowed to go on now," Tewari said.
Congress leader Manish Tewari on Tuesday, speaking on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Lok Sabha, said that the first electoral reform that should take place is introduce an amendment to the law governing the selection of members of the Election Commission.
"The first reform that should happen is an amendment to the law governing the selection of members of the Election Commission. My suggestion is that LoP Lok Sabha and Chief Justice of India should be added to the committee for the selection of members of the Election Commission...," Tewari stated in his speech in the Lower House.
Congress leader Manish Tewari on Tuesday, speaking on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Lok Sabha, questioned the NDA-led Centre for conducting the SIR exercise in all Indian states which are set to undergo elections.
“It is unfortunate that many members here are having to raise questions on the neutrality of the Election Commission of India,” he said.
He demanded that the government should inform the public about the reasons behind conducting the SIR in the polling states. He also demanded the counting of 100 per cent VVPAT votes, or else, urged them to shift back to ballot papers.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Anurag Thakur said that the party is ready for a discussion on the electoral reforms in the Parliament, news agency PTI reported.
"We have always said that the BJP... NDA are ready to hold discussion over any issue. Congress has lost over 95 elections under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi. Congress will hit century of defeats in 2026 and this will happen under Rahul Gandhi's leadership. Reforms have been priority of our government," Thakur said.
"From ease of doing business, ease of living to discontinuing old British-era laws... SIR was done successfully in Bihar and it should be done in other states as well. We welcome election reforms, it is the right of the Election Commission and we are ready for a discussion over," he added. (PTI)

Jha said, “The Prime Minister thanked all NDA allies for the Bihar election result. He said that the organic way in which the NDA worked in Bihar is what brought the result. The Prime Minister himself visited Bihar repeatedly… The Prime Minister praised Nitish Kumar’s contribution and said that the way he worked both before and during this election, and the work he has done in Bihar, was commendable... Now, the double‑engine government, through the last two Budgets, has given Bihar all the assistance it received. All the work done for public welfare by the Government of India is the result of this; and especially the way women came out to vote in the election…” (PTI)
The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha proceedings began at 11 am on Tuesday.
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Lok Sabha speech during debate on 'Vande Mataram' on Monday said that the song is being used to "create divisions," news agency PTI quoted.
Speaking to PTI, Chaturvedi alleged, “The same Vande Mataram, which once united the country and for which millions made the ultimate sacrifice in the freedom struggle, is being used again to create division. False narratives are being peddled, including attempts to polarise the song. The opposition has succeeded in exposing those fake claims and reflecting truth to the public… Vande Mataram stands above all as a symbol of national service and love for the country.”
A day earlier, in his speech, Modi had said, "It is unfortunate for the country that Congress compromised on Vande Mataram. They bowed to the Muslim League and decided to fragment Vande Mataram."
Congress leader and the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi will lead the Opposition charge as discussion on electoral reforms is set to take place in the Lower House on Tuesday.

Congress MP Deepender Hooda urged the government on Monday to install a statue of Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, the composer of national song Vande Mataram, in the Parliament House complex.
Participating in a discussion in the Lok Sabha on the completion of 150 years of Vande Mataram, the Congress MP said if the government brings a proposal to install Chatterjee's statue in Parliament, the opposition party will support it.
In an apparent swipe at the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for initiating the discussion on Vande Mataram, Hooda said, "India is our mother and no true devotee can bring his mother into politics." "Today, attempts are being made to use nationalism for electoral gains. Devotion to the motherland is being used for devotion to votes. Some people pronounce 'Vande Voteram' more than 'Vande Mataram'. The country is watching all this," he added.
Also participating in the debate, Congress MP A Bimol Akoijam said at least three hours should be given for a discussion on the situation in ethnic strife-torn Manipur.
He also alleged that the BJP believes in dividing people and that its nationalism is based on religious and cultural imagination.
The Lok Sabha member from Inner Manipur said, "What is the purpose of this discussion? There are many real issues that need to be discussed. There is massive unemployment, poor air quality, the IndiGo crisis.... We are demanding a three-to-four-hour discussion on Manipur, but nobody cares. You talk about patriotism." He alleged that 65,000 people have been rendered homeless in the northeastern state due to the crisis caused by the "government's failure".

Considering the capacity and demand that have come up in India's aviation industry, today, the sector needs five big players, and the government is making all efforts to encourage more companies in the sector, Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu said in the Rajya Sabha on Monday.
"We are talking about two airlines, but the capacity and the demand that India is creating today, we need to have five big airlines, and that has been the effort from the ministry to encourage more airlines to come in," Naidu added.
When Maharashtra MP Milind Murli Deora said that people are concerned about the market dominance of one player, i.e. Indigo, which has over 60 per cent market share, the minister said that the government will engage with the necessary stakeholders and is already working continuously to encourage competition.
"This is the time to start an airline in India. There is so much growth happening," Naidu said, responding to Deroa's suggestions that the aviation ministry, through DGCA in partnership with another regulator which comes under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, the Competition Commission of India, should do a thorough review of India's aviation sector to ensure more competition and ascertain barriers at the entry level.
Naidu also spoke on a technical fault in the AMSS (Automatic Message Switching System) at the Indira Gandhi International Airport on November 6, 2025, stating that as soon as it was flagged, the Airport Authority of India, under which the Air Navigation System and Air Traffic Control System operate, immediately identified and took steps to address it.
Responding to issues related to passengers' inconvenience, the minister said that there are strict civil aviation requirements (CAR) rules in place, and all the airline operators have to strictly follow them. He added that an inquiry is underway regarding the technical fault as the "Airport Authority of India is thoroughly looking into the system fault", and the government will act based on its feedback.
"The continuous technology upgradation happens in this sector. All the countries keep upgrading the system that they have. We keep a continuous watch on what is happening across the world," Naidu said.
On the concerns raised by AIADMK MP M Thambidurai, that why IndiGo was allowed to book tickets while its services faced mass cancellations, Naidu said that a total of 586,705 PNRs were cancelled and refunded, amounting to a total of Rs 569 crore.

Taking a swipe at Congress, BJP MP Anurag Singh Thakur on Monday said national song "Vande Mataram" is not just a song but a 'maha mantra' which provides energy to patriotic people, while for some it is a reason for allergy, who indulge in divisive politics.
Participating in a Lok Sabha discussion marking 150 years of Vande Mataram, Thakur said, "'Vande Mataram' for patriotic people like us gives energy, but for some it is the reason for allergy...Britishers had a problem with 'Vande Mataram,' (Mohammed Ali) Jinnah had a problem, now Munna of Jinnah also has a problem with 'Vande Mataram'," he said.
"'Vande Mataram' is not just a song but a maha mantra. It does not hurt any religious sentiment. It is the song of India's glory," he said.
"Now it is time for Congress to repent its past mistake, and that is why they are afraid, he said, adding, "'Vande Mataram' sirf geet nahi balki rashtriya prem ki reet hai, isliye Congress bhaibheet hai (Vande Mataram is not just a song, but a tradition of national love, that's why the Congress is worried)." When Prime Minister Narendra Modi started this historic debate in the House, two important members of the Opposition were missing, he said without taking the names of Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi. Those who don't get energy from this are either Congress, Communist or Muslim League, he added.
"These twin words 'Vande Mataram' have no beginning, no end. They are eternal and immortal," he said.
Citing the indifference of Congress toward 'Vande Mataram,' Thakur said, the UPA government in 2006 had taken a decision that the song would be sung in all educational institutions, but the government had to relent to radicalists and their idea and made it "voluntary" from "compulsory." He emphasised that every Indian has to bow their head before the tricolour and chant "'Vande Mataram', 'Vande Mataram.'"
"It is the maha mantra for nationalism, and our country has weakened whenever we have forgotten." During the debate, Arvind Sawant Shiv Sena (UBT), alleged that how can BJP forget that their parent organisation RSS did not unfurl the national flag at their headquarters for 50 years and also did not sing "Vande Mataram," and today they are all praise for it.

Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra on Monday accused the BJP of using "Vande Mataram" song as an electoral wedge ahead of the 2026 Bengal polls, claiming that the ruling party was "butchering the soul" of the song "far more than any 1937 resolution ever did."
Participating in a Lok Sabha discussion marking 150 years of Vande Mataram, Moitra claimed the timing of the debate was politically motivated, alleging that "some half-wit BJP IT cell minion has probably advised you that the Vande Mataram card, if played right, will give an advantage to the BJP in the 2026 Bengal elections." She said the TMC welcomed the conversation because it would "only prove how removed you are from the soul of Bengal, and how our Ma will never be hostage to your narrow electoral goals." Calling the BJP's commitment to the song "a badly scripted comedy," she mocked party MPs for, according to her, being unable to correctly sing Vande Mataram.
Moitra questioned the ruling party's claim to the legacy of the freedom struggle, asking, "Who in the BJP can claim even a tenuous link to the freedom movement that today you feel you are the guardians of Vande Mataram?" Moitra accused the BJP government of deepening religious divides while pretending to uphold the spirit of the song.
"This government, which claims to promote Vande Mataram, has ensured even the moon has been partitioned. Hindu women can break their Karva Chauth fast on their rooftops, but a Muslim in a BJP-ruled state is forbidden from offering Eid ka namaz to the same moon — and you are blaming a song for India's divisiveness." The Krishnanagar MP said she was speaking "as a true Bengali" and on behalf of "dashkoti Bengalis whom you call Bangladeshis and Rohingyas, whom you harass on the streets and throw out when pregnant across the border." She then dissected the stanzas of Vande Mataram, contrasting its imagery with current realities.
On "Sujalam suphalam", Moitra said India's water crisis has worsened under the BJP: "Over 70% of India's surface water is undrinkable. India ranks 120 out of 122 countries in the water quality index, and yet the government cuts Jal Jeevan Mission funds. Bengal alone is owed Rs 3,000 crore." On "Malayaja-shitalam", she cited Delhi's severe pollution: "The AQI in the national capital stays between 800 and 1,000. Fossil fuel-driven pollution claims 1.72 million Indian lives annually, but 78 per cent of thermal power plants have been exempted from installing anti-pollution systems." On "Shasya-shyamalam", she said the government has "allowed 37 per cent of India's land to slip into degradation" while reducing the agriculture ministry's budget.
Turning to "Suhasinim", which evokes sweetness and compassion, Moitra accused BJP leaders of routinely delivering hate speeches. She also claimed the government's "hurried, arbitrary" directives have created such pressure on poll officers that "BLOs are committing suicide." Moitra claimed that the government was selectively invoking Vande Mataram while ignoring Rabindranath Tagore's inclusive vision in Jana Gana Mana. She said the Prime Minister had "ignited this entire discussion to divert attention from the government's failings." Issuing a direct challenge, Moitra said, "If you have the courage, come and fight the 2026 Bengal election ...Ten crore Bengalis will rise to teach you the real meaning of Vande Mataram."

“Mission Sudarshan Chakra building an impenetrable security ring around key national assets, Operation Sindoor proved its precision; steady revenue is needed to keep our defence forces fighting,” says Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in Rajya Sabha.
Time for discussion on Vande Mataram in Lok Sabha extended
Vande Mataram did not get the justice it deserved, said Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in Lok Sabha, and added the national song was marginalised post Independence.
“Our Prime Minister Modi is no longer the same Prime Minister he once was because his confidence has started to wane. His policies are weakening the country, so what else can he do but talk about the past?” Priyanka Gandhi said.
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is speaking in Lok Sabha. Addressing the necessity of discussion on Vande Mataram, Vadra says, "The Bengal Assembly polls is upcoming and there has been several deaths in the country. The government wants to divert its attention from the core issues."
Discussion on the 150th anniversary of the national song Vande Mataram is going on in Rajya Sabha. BJP MP Anurag Thakur is addressing the Lower House and taking a dig at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Anurag says the Leader of Opposition is not even in the Parliament during the discussion. He says Vande Mataram is holy and virtuous.
Further, he said the Britishers and Mohammad Ali Jinnah had problem with Vande Mataram. And now, the 'munnah' of Jinnah has problem with Vande Mataram.
West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee on Monday welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's move to initiate a discussion on 'Vande Mataram' in the Lok Sabha, saying her party has no objection to it.
"Let him do it. We have no problem," Banerjee told reporters at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport here before leaving for an official trip to North Bengal.
Modi, who initiated a day-long discussion on 150 years of Vande Mataram in the lower House of Parliament, noted that the song stood like a rock and inspired unity despite British oppression.
The song was written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, and its tune was composed by Jadunath Bhattacharya.
Banerjee, however, referred to remarks by some BJP leaders expressing their dislike for national icons, including Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Mahatma Gandhi and Raja Ram Mohan Roy.
During the ' Vande Mataram' debate, Deputy Leader of Congress in the Lok Sabha highlighted how often Prime Minister Narendra Modi refers to Pandit Nehru and the Congress in his speeches, citing examples from Operation Sindoor, the Constitution’s 75th anniversary, and the President’s addresses. " No matter how hard you try - you won't be able to put even a single black mark on Pandit Nehru Ji's contributions," he said.

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Lok Sabha Monday, alleging that he was politicising Vande Mataram. He asserted that it was the Congress party that had upheld the national song in its true spirit.
Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi criticised the BJP in Parliament, saying the party has little understanding of Bengal and labels everything as ‘Bangladeshi’. He added that the BJP also fails to grasp the legacy of Bankim Chatterjee and what he stood for.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday lamented that the Constitution was "throttled" and the nation chained by the Emergency when national song Vande Mataram completed 100 years.
Initiating a day-long discussion on 150 years of Vande Mataram in the Lok Sabha, Modi noted that Vande Mataram stood like a rock and inspired unity despite British oppression.
"When Vande Mataram completed 100 years, the nation was chained by the Emergency. At that time, the Constitution was throttled and those who lived and died for patriotism were pushed behind bars," he said.
"The Emergency was a dark chapter in our history. Now we have the opportunity to restore the greatness of Vande Mataram. And I believe this opportunity should not be allowed to pass," Modi said.
The prime minister noted that the mantra of Vande Mataram gave power and inspiration to the entire country during freedom struggle.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Vande Mataram was subjected to “injustice” in the last century despite its widespread emotional connect, and said its history should be shared with the younger generation. Referring to the Muslim League’s opposition and M.A. Jinnah’s stand in 1937, he said Jawaharlal Nehru had expressed concern to Subhas Chandra Bose about the context of Anandamath, arguing that it could hurt Muslim sentiments, instead of firmly backing the song.
he opposition on Monday demanded in the Lok Sabha that the government should inform the country about what it is doing in the wake of the IndiGo flight disruptions and the inconvenience being faced by the people at various airports across the country.
Speaker Om Birla said Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu will give a detailed statement on the matter in the Lower House on Monday or Tuesday.
Speaking in the Lok Sabha soon after the Question Hour, Congress' deputy leader in the Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi said, "Through you (the Speaker), we request the government that the Civil Aviation Ministry should tell the country through this House that why people in all airports across the country since many days (are facing trouble), there are dialysis patients, people who have weddings in their house, people who want to reach their elderly, there is chaos at the airports." "We were told that even people wearing Hawai chappals will travel in airplanes but prices have soared to Rs 20,000, coffee (at airports) is for Rs 250 and planes are delayed. Therefore, the government should tell us what is it doing," he said.
The opposition has been attacking the government over the IndiGo flight disruptions and blaming it for the "unprecedented crisis".
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the British used Bengal as the testing ground for their divisive “Divide and Rule” policy after 1857, believing that breaking Bengal would fragment the nation. Recalling the 1905 Partition of Bengal, he said Vande Mataram emerged as the rallying cry for a united Bengal and later the Swadeshi movement, even as the British banned the song and punished those who sang or published it.
"Bengal was partitioned but the Swadeshi movement picked up. Vande Mataram resonated across the country. Bankim created a bhaav vishwa through his song. The British banned Vande Mataram. Singing or publishing, or even uttering the words Vande Mataram, could result in punishment," he said.
Speaking in the Lok Sabha during the debate marking 150 years of Vande Mataram, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "Vande Mataram is not merely a mantra for political freedom. It was not just about making the British leave. It was more than that. The freedom struggle was a struggle to free our motherland. Since the Vedic times, we have considered this land as the mother. Even Lord Ram said a similar thing when he left Lanka."
"Vande Mataram became the voice of the freedom struggle. Vande Mataram also had a vision for free India. The British looked down on us; they wanted to show us as inferior, weak and lazy. Vande Mataram challenged that fashion. Bankim revealed the strength of India. It showed to millions that the struggle was not just for a piece of land. It was about resurrecting the glorious past of India, " he added.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi told the Lok Sabha that Vande Mataram was written at a time when British rulers were trying to impose “God Save the Queen” on Indian households, and said the song went beyond being a political mantra for freedom. "Vande Mataram not just a mantra for political freedom; it was a sacred war cry to rid Bharatmata of vestiges of colonialism," he said.
Speaking in the Lok Sabha during the debate marking 150 years of Vande Mataram, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recalled that the song’s 50th year coincided with colonial rule and its 100th year with the Emergency, when he said the Constitution was stifled. "Vande Mataram gave us freedom in 1947. Today when I speak on 150 years of Vande Mataram, there is no government or opposition here. We are sitting here because of the freedom struggle. This is another opportunity for us to walk together. The country should be self-reliant. We should restate our resolve that the country becomes developed in 2047," he said.
Pime Minister Narendra Modi will initiate the debate on the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram in Lok Sabha on Monday, while Home Minister Amit Shah will begin the discussion in Rajya Sabha on December 9.
The government is redesigning the Prasad scheme aimed at encouraging pilgrim tourism in various states of the country, the Lok Sabha was informed on Monday.
Responding to a supplementary during Question Hour, Culture minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said 54 projects have been sanctioned under the scheme in the last ten years.
He said the scheme was aligned with the financial cycle and now that the cycle is on the verge of being completed and the ministry is redesigning the scheme.
The Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Augmentation Drive scheme was launched in 2014-15 to develop and revitalise pilgrim sites across India.
Based on proposals moved by respective state governments, it has focussed on tourist infrastructure to improve the experience of pilgrims or tourists.
The country has seen the Modi government’s failure in the last 48 hours. IndiGo flight disruption, rupee sliding and the Goa nightclub fire show the Modi-led government’s failure and inefficiency. The government must apologise," said TMC MP Sagarika Ghose.
Union Minister Giriraj Singh said, "If Vande Mataram will not be discussed in the temple of democracy, then where? Some people do not accept Vande Mataram but Babri Masjid. It is a heritage of India, and it must be discussed." On suspended TMC MLA Humayun Kabir, he adds, "It is not he who has laid the foundation stone of the replica of Babri Masjid, but Mamata Banerjee. It has come as a hidden agenda, and there is a strategy behind it. Mamata Banerjee will face the consequences for this."
On the Vande Mataram debate, CPI MP P Sandosh said, "The sole intention of the BJP is to divide the people further. They want to make it about the Bengal elections. Do they have faith in India’s independence movement, and did they take part? Bengal is a hotspot for them, which is why they also organised the Gita Mahasammelan. We will take part in the discussion. Let’s wait and watch the content of the PM’s speech; that will tell the real story."
On the discussion to be held in Parliament marking 150 years of Vande Mataram, Union Minister and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) chief Chirag Paswan said, "Generations have passed, many may know Vande Mataram, but they may not fully understand its significance or the sense of unity it represents. The younger generation in particular—perhaps first-time voters who are participating in the democratic process for the first time—may not be able to grasp the passion and emotion that Vande Mataram once inspired. So I believe the youth must understand Vande Mataram, its importance, and especially the spirit behind it, in a deeper way. That is why I feel the debate that is going to take place in the House today is very important. I urge the younger generation in particular to listen to this debate and pay close attention to everyone's views."
Congress MP Saptagiri Ulaka on Monday gave a notice in the Lok Sabha seeking suspension of business to demand a discussion on the case of sexual harassment, blackmail, and intimidation of a first-year BEd Scheduled Caste student from Odisha.

The 6th Session of the 18th Lok Sabha and the 269th Session of the Rajya Sabha commenced on December 1 (Monday), marking the beginning of the Winter Session of Parliament. The session will conclude on December 19.
Today, the Lok Sabha will witness a special discussion on the 150th anniversary of "Vande Mataram".
As the national song completes 150 years, the Lok Sabha will witness a special discussion on the 150th anniversary of "Vande Mataram", highlighting its historical significance and enduring legacy in India's freedom movement.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to participate in the discussion, which will also touch upon many important and lesser-known facets of the iconic song. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is also expected to open the discussion in the Upper House.
The BJP-led NDA government has been allotted three hours for its participation in the Lok Sabha debate, while a total of 10 hours has been earmarked for the entire discussion, as the debate will also take place in the upper house, the Rajya Sabha, on Tuesday, December 9.
Metamorphosing from a song written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, Vande Mataram became the symbol of protest against the Partition of Bengal in 1905 and soon afterwards caught national imagination as the rallying cry of the freedom struggle, becoming a fixture at Congress sessions before Independence.
On Monday, Parliament will discuss Vande Mataram for 10 hours on the occasion of its 150th anniversary, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to initiate the debate on the government’s behalf. The song, which was partly written in Sanskrit and partly in Bengali, was composed in 1875 and included in Chattopadhyay’s novel Anandamath in 1881 during its serialisation in the magazine Bangadarshan. During the 1896 Congress session in Calcutta, Rabindranath Tagore set it to tune and sang it for the first time.
The widespread use of the song — Vande Mataram means “Mother, I bow to you” — began only after it captured popular imagination during the movement against Lord Curzon’s Partition of Bengal of 1905. It transcended the province, with the use of Sanskrit making it relatable in large parts of the country. There was also a suggestion at the time that the word saptakoti, or seven crores, the population of united Bengal at the time, be substituted with trimshatkoti, meaning 30 crores, the estimated population of India at the time, to adapt the song as one symbolising the Indian freedom struggle.
