After Brexit, fears in Goa tourism sector

Almost a year after the fall in value of Ruble hit the inflow of Russian tourists to Goa, the state’s tourism sector is bracing for another hit due to the plunge in the Pound Sterling following Brexit.

“We may face fresh threats if UK tourists fail to show up in good numbers. It would put survival of several standalone businesses in question,” said Piference Fernandes, member of the small and medium hotelier association of Calangute.

President of the travel and tourism association of Goa, Savio Messias, said, “The currency depreciation may force them to reduce their spending during visits. But those who provide cheaper accommodation may benefit.”

Goa tourism director Sanjeev C Gauns said it is too early to comment on the impact Brexit could have on tourism. “We are watching the developments closely,” he said.
