Mysuru Dasara festival is celebrated over 10 days starting with Navratri, and, on the 10th day (Vijaya Dashami), the idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari is carried in a grand procession.

To mark the beginning of today's celebrations, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai will perform Nandi Dhwaja puja at the north gate of the Mysuru Palace between 2.36 pm and 2.50 pm.

The local authorities are expecting at least 5 lakh people to attend the last day of Dasara festivities.

Mysuru will witness the grand Jamboo Savari (elephant procession), after two years of restricted celebrations, today. The procession will begin at 5 pm.

The grand procession will be carried out from Mysuru's Amba Vilas Palace to Bannimantap ground covering a 5km distance.

This year, 57-year-old Abhimanyu will carry 750kg golden idol of the goddess.

Apart from the procession, a torchlight parade will be held at 7 pm, during which Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot will receive the guard of honour.

About 47 tableaus depicting the culture and tradition of the nation will also be a part of the procession.

The Dasara festivities this year were inaugurated by President Droupadi Murmu. She offered floral tributes to the deity Chamundeshwari, atop Chamundi hills near Mysuru last week.
