What was the ‘Babri Masjid’ remark that got MLA Humayun Kabir suspended from TMC?

TMC MLA Humayun Kabir has been suspended after his remarks on rebuilding the Babri Masjid, Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim announced. The Calcutta High Court will hear a PIL on the issue on Friday.

The Trinamool Congress on Thursday suspended MLA Humayun Kabir for his remarks on laying the foundation stone of a Babri Masjid in Malda. “We noticed that one of our MLAs from Murshidabad suddenly declared that he would build the Babri Masjid. Why suddenly Babri masjid? We already warned him. As per the decision of our party, TMC, we are suspending MLA Humayun Kabir,” Kolkata Mayor and TMC leader Firhad Hakim said. After his suspension, the Beldanaga MLA said, he would fight both the TMC and the BJP in the Bengal Assembly polls next year.

The Calcutta High Court on Friday will hear a public interest litigation concerning Beldanaga MLA Humayun Kabir’s remarks on rebuilding the Babri Masjid. The Chief Justice’s Division Bench will hear the case.

Earlier in the morning, Kabir said he had received an invitation for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s programme organised by the TMC. He said: “I am busy as December 6 is approaching. I will go there for an hour-long meeting only, as I am occupied with the work related to the Babri Masjid stone-laying ceremony on December 6. I had announced a year ago that we would lay the foundation stone on December 6.”

‘Will fight both TMC and BJP in Bengal Assembly elections’

After his suspension, Kabir said: “I will be laying the foundation stone on December 6. It is my personal matter and the party has nothing to do with it. They had suspended me earlier for six years in 2015, and now again; I have nothing to say about it. I stand by what I have said.”

He further said: “I will announce a new party on December 22 and will field candidates on 135 Assembly seats (in West Bengal polls). I will fight against both the BJP and them (TMC). They can do whatever they want.”

Why was Humayun Kabir suspended?

Humayun Kabir has been repeatedly asserting that he would lay the foundation stone of a Babri Masjid replica on December 6. The mosque will be modelled after the Ayodhya Babri Masjid, which was demolished on December 6, 1992.

Kabir had also issued a warning, saying NH-34 would be under “Muslim control” on December 6, reported news agency PTI. He even alleged that the Murshidabad administration was acting like an “RSS agent” warned officials not to “play with fire” by trying to stop his programme.

TMC vs BJP over Humayun Kabir’s comments

The TMC was quick to distance itself from his remarks, and eventually suspended him on Thursday, December 4, for “anti-party activities”. “hose were his personal comments and do not reflect the party’s position,” TMC leader Kunal Ghosh had said earlier this week.

The BJP claimed that Kabir’s assertion showed that he enjoyed the support of the ruling party in Bengal and that the TMC was polarising people. Union Minister Giriraj Singh said: “Mamata Banerjee probably wants to turn Bengal into Bangladesh, just like when Jinnah launched ‘Direct Action Day’. The CM, who considers herself the Prime Minister, will observe December 6 as ‘Babri Masjid demolition day’.”
