Karisma Kapoor bled through her sharp metal dress, continued to shoot: ‘Didn’t realise when it happened’

Karisma Kapoor was one of the most popular actors in the Hindi film industry in the 1990s and through the decade, she appeared in many mainstream hits. One such film was David Dhawan’s Biwi No 1 where she starred alongside Salman Khan and Sushmita Sen. Recently, costume designer Ashley Rebello recalled an incident from the set of the film when Karisma started bleeding onto her metal dress as it pricked her skin from the edges.

In a chat with Galatta India, Ashley shared, “We were doing a song in Biwi No 1 where I gave Karisma a metal dress, and while she was doing her steps, the metal pricked her, and she was bleeding throughout. I spotted red coming on to the gold dress.” Ashley said that they stopped immediately to address the situation as Karisma was bleeding all over her clothes. By this time the choreographer asked Karisma if they could continue the shoot tomorrow but the actor insisted that they finish it the same day.

“Karisma said no, it’s a full set. Such a professional person… We shot and we finished the whole thing, and then I changed the outfit the next day,” he shared and added that they added a bandage under the dress, and covered it up with a skin coloured garment, and then placed the metal dress on top so they could finish that part of the shoot.

When Ashley later asked Karisma as to why she didn’t raise an alarm earlier, she said that she didn’t even realise that the dress was hurting her. “She said, ‘Ashley, at that time, I didn’t think this would happen. I didn’t even realise when this happened’. She’s such a dedicated actress,” he said.

Karisma was last seen in the Netflix special Dining with the Kapoors along with the rest of her family. Her last acting appearance was in 2024’s Murder Mubarak.
