Woman, boy die in tipper truck-private bus crash in Amritsar, more deaths feared

Two people, including a woman and a 14-year-old boy, were killed in a road accident in Amritsar when a speeding tipper truck collided head-on with a private bus on Wednesday evening.

Several others sustained injuries in the crash that took place near Kathunangal, the police said, adding that the death toll is likely to increase as the condition of some of the passengers is critical. Among the injured is a Nigerian national.

The impact of the crash was so intense that the front portion of the bus was destroyed, and several seats were dislodged from the bus body, according to eyewitnesses.

At the time of the incident, around 40 passengers were travelling in the private bus, en route from Gurdaspur to Amritsar.

The deceased boy has been identified as Sahib Singh, while the identity of the woman remains unknown, the police said.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic and panic-stricken immediately following the collision. Residents of the locality assisted in rushing the injured to nearby private hospitals, and more than 15 passengers were admitted to the Guru Nanak Dev Hospital in Amritsar.

The police officials from the Kathunangal station have seized the tipper truck involved in the crash. However, the truck driver had fled the scene immediately after the accident.
