The newly formed union territory of Ladakh went for polling in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in phase 5 on Monday, May 20, as the single constituency territory received a total of 71.82 per cent voter turnout, which was the third highest number overall among the union territories, after Lakshadweep and Puducherry. Ladakh’s overall number was also significantly higher than the national average of 62.20 per cent during phase 5.
The union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu opened their EVMs and ballot boxes during phase 3 on Tuesday, May 7, as the two seats of the states witnessed a voter turnout of 69.87 per cent, which was 4.47 per cent higher than the national average of 64.40 during the third phase. The union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu has the second-lowest voter turnout in UTs after Andaman and Nicobar Islands after three phases.
Notably, Four of eight union territories witnessed the 2024 Lok Sabha pollings in phase 1 on Friday, April 19. The union territories, following the national trend of the first phase, witnessed a drop in voter turnout, with Lakshadweep getting the highest percentage of voter turnout of 84.16 per cent, followed by Puducherry (78.90%) and Andaman and Nicobar Islands (64.10%).
While all the eyes during the Lok Sabha Election results are on the high-intensity competition of the states, the political landscape of the union territories like Ladakh, Puducherry, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep are seldom discussed. The reason being them having a single seat each (Except Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, who have two seats) in the Lok Sabha assembly.
However, it is often these union territories that act as a direct five-year report card of the central government, as they are the one who are responsible for the administration in these regions. The collective numbers of union territories often played the role of the tie-breaker in the formation of central government. While historically these regions were dominated by the local parties, the recent rise of the local parties has resulted in making the tussle for getting the results of 2024 Lok Sabha Elections in their favour even more intense among the political parties.
All the union territories have their Lok Sabha polling scheduled in different phases during the electoral period, giving each union territory their own time frame for the General Elections.
All the union territories except Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir will be having a single phase polling during the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections, given the fact that all of them have just one seat in their account (Except Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, who has two seats).
All the union territories of Ladakh, Puducherry, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep, have one single Lok Sabha constituency of the same name as themselves, except Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, who has two seats, but still of same name. The union territories have historically been dominated by national parties, as seen in 2019 elections also, when most of these seats were won by incumbent BJP, given the few exceptions.
