The absurdist comedy-drama film Everything Everywhere All at Once (EEAAO) has been in the news ever since its release last year. After having a successful run during the awards season and winning seven Oscars, the superhit is still ruling Twitter.
Most recently, netizens are using a quote from the film to highlight all the unfulfilled OTPs from movies, comics, and TV shows. OTP stands for ‘one true pairing’ and refers to one’s favourite fictional romantic relationship.
As the movie nears its end, Waymond Wang (played by Ke Huy Quan) addresses the protagonist Evelyn Quan Wang (Michelle Yeoh) and says, “In another life, I would have really liked just doing laundry and taxes with you”. His simple statement prompts Evelyn to see beauty in little mundane things that she enjoys with her husband in her otherwise boring domestic life.

As someone who has solely shipped pairings that have crashed and burned “in another life, i would have really liked just doing laundry and taxes with you” trend seems like a personal attack

Many people found meaning in this simple statement and are now using it to highlight the longing of potential fictional characters who did not get their happy ending in the original canon.
For instance, Om Prakash Makhija’s (Shah Rukh Khan) wistful love for Shantipriya (Deepika Padukone) in Om Shanti Om, the incomplete love story between Abhimanyu Roy (Ayushmann Khurrana) and Bindu Shankaranarayan (Parineeti Chopra) in Meri Pyaari Bindu, and the abrupt ending of Deepak Kumar (Vicky Kaushal) and Shaalu Gupta’s (Shweta Tripathi) story in Masaan.
Netizens have also used the quote to point to the unrealistic but robust parasocial relationship between fans and celebrities (primarily within K-pop fandoms).
