The latest episode of Shark Tank India Season 5 opened with a young entrepreneur pitching his healthy and tasty oats brand, called GOAT Life. The 26-year-old Yash Karla highlighted the nutrition problem in the country and argued that his brand fills the vacuum in the market. He presented his oats flavours in a unique manner and claimed that his brand offers a one-stop solution to people who are missing breakfast and other important meals throughout the day because of lack of options, time or both. He sought 1% equity in his brand for an amount of Rs 36 lakh, with his company’s current evaluation sitting at Rs 36 crore.
Yash started his pitch in a unique manner, by having the judges taste his product while playing a fun game. He invited them to play some rounds of ‘Never Have I Ever’, where the judges had to drink shots of the different oats flavours if they had in fact done the deed prompted in the question. He asked questions like, “Have you ever missed breakfast?” and “Did you ever grab a packet of chips and biscuits because you didn’t know what to eat?” All the five sharks drank at each and every question, which helped Yash demonstrate all the flavours. After tasting the mocha flavour, Anupam even said, “This is solid.”
After he revealed his offer, ‘shark’ Namita Thapar asked his age. He said, “It depends on who’s asking.” Anupam quickly quipped at Namita and said, “You should say 45 if she’s asked.” Yash answered in a sly manner and said, “No, no. She is looking pretty.” Namita laughed away the compliment and said, “Thank you for that, but that won’t guarantee you a deal.”
He was then asked about his journey before GOAT Life, to which he said, “I was born and brought up in Kota. I belong to a Punjabi family, who are obsessed with food as well as weight loss. I have even lost 20 kgs since starting my fitness journey in 11th grade. I have eaten at least 2100 bowls of oatmeal and over 10,000 eggs. When I came back, I started my first company, Wisegg. The drink we made tasted fruity, but it had the nutrition of 10 eggs in it. We couldn’t sustain the company because we failed to increase its shelf life naturally.”
He mentioned that he started GOAT Life with Rs 5 lakh, out of which Rs 2 lakh were given to him by the Government of Rajasthan. Aman Gupta was the first to speak out, as he appreciated the packaging of the product and called it “very cool”. Amit Jain then jumped into the conversation and asked about the impressive 20 g protein per serving claim. Yash answered, “The most amount of protein comes from whey, then it’s oats and skimmed milk powder. This has around 50%-60% whey content in it.”
Anupam Mittal then cited recent research on oats and said, “Many researchers say that oats used to be a peasant food. These studies also show that oats aren’t very good for you. Esa na ho (It shouldn’t happen) that suddenly 5 years down the line, people are saying that oats shouldn’t be consumed.” Yash quickly replied, “The main concern is around the Glycemic Index (a measure of how quickly carbs can raise blood sugar levels). If you consume oats with high fibre and protein, the level doesn’t spike.”
Then Yash provided some economics for his company. In FY 23-24, revenue was Rs 11 lakh. In FY 24-25 the revenue grew to Rs 25 lakh, and the projected revenue for FY 25-26 is Rs 5 crore. He explained that he has already gone through two rounds of funding through which he received a total of Rs 2.7 crore. Impressed with his plan and attitude, Aman said, “Tu oats nahi baich raha, tu lifestyle baich raha hai (You aren’t selling oats; you’re selling a lifestyle).”
The offers soon started rolling in, as Namita offered Rs 36 lakh for 1.8%, and the rest of the sharks all offered Rs 1 crore for 4%. In the end, Yash went with the combination of Aman and Anupam, who offered him Rs 2 crore for 4% equity each.
