A degree from the University of Cambridge is often considered a pathway to success, but Dr Marika Niihori’s experience tells a different story. Despite earning a doctorate in Physics from one of the most prestigious universities in the world, she faced rejection and loneliness. Niihori, who completed her PhD in October last year, initially believed that securing a high-paying job would be easy. However, reality proved far more challenging. Based in London, she applied to numerous positions, only to be met with over 70 rejections. The job hunt also took a toll on her mental health, leaving Niihori feeling isolated and lonely when she compared herself to friends who seemed to be moving forward in their careers and lives. Niihori documented her struggles on Instagram. In one post, she admitted to underestimating how tough the job market would be, revealing how stress and self-doubt crept in. "I’m constantly battling that feeling of loneliness, even in a city like London, where everyone seems to be on their own path," wrote Niihori. Despite the struggles, Niihori acknowledged her privilege of being able to take time off. "I didn’t expect to take a ‘career break.’ I thought completing a PhD would bring clarity to my future. But having the flexibility and privilege to take some time off has been a blessing in disguise," she wrote.
