Former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif declared victory in national elections on Friday, saying his party has emerged as the largest and would talk to other groups to form a coalition government as it had failed to win a clear majority on its own.
Sharif’s announcement came after more than three-quarters of the 265 seats had declared results, more than 24 hours after polling ended on Thursday, marred by the deaths of 28 people in militant attacks.
A party must win 133 seats out of 265 in the National Assembly being contested to form the next government.
Here is what we know so far:
🔴 Independent candidates backed by jailed ex-PM Imran Khan have won 95 out of 235 seats in which the counting has been completed, said a Reuters report quoting broadcaster GEO News.
🔴 Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz)(PML-N), which has won at least 66 seats as per the last update, may form a coalition government with independent candidates.
🔴 The four Sharif family members of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz party have finally managed to win their National Assembly seats from their stronghold Lahore. PML-N supremo and former premier Nawaz Sharif, 74, won from NA-130. He, however, faced a significant defeat against independent candidate Shahzada Gastasap in the NA-15 Mansehra constituency.
🔴 As per the latest update, Bilawal Bhutto’s Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has won 51 seats.
🔴 PPP chief Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, son of assassinated premier Benazir Bhutto, secured victory in two seats — the NA-194 seat in Larkana and the NA-196 seat in Qamber Shahdadtkot-I with 85,370 votes. However, Bilawal lost the Lahore National Assembly seat NA-127 to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s Atta Tarar, managing to get only 15,000 votes.
