For a long time now India’s one-day team has suffered from one glaring drawback: the lack of a seam bowling all-rounder. But John Wright believes the solution lies within, in the shape of skipper Sourav Ganguly.

‘‘There are several people vying for that position. Joginder Sharma went to Bangladesh and JP Yadav is another option but I just believe that Ganguly should bowl much more. He can do the job for us because he is a quality seam bowler’’, he told The Indian Express in an exclusive interview today.

‘‘We might not need that option for the 2007 World Cup since it is in the West Indies and we will be based in Trinidad — where the wickets are slow — but for now it is a must that we find that missing piece of the jigsaw.’’

He believes that it is easier to fix shortcomings in the one-day format than the Tests. ‘‘We just failed to gain momentum in the one-dayers last season but I wouldn’t worry too much about it. We have the players, the batting talent and potential to take on the best in the one-day format. Its just a matter of putting the pieces together.’’

He was also pleased to see the emergence of MS Dhoni as the wicket-keeper for the one-dayers and believes that Dhoni has the ability to succeed in his role as the batting wicket-keeper.

‘‘Dhoni has the inside running on that slot right now. He will have to bat in the top three in the one-dayers. He is very flexible and the hundred that he scored in the Challengers (in Mumbai) proves he has the mettle to do it’’, Wright said.

That’s good news not just for Dhoni, as Wright explained. ‘‘So Rahul Dravid will finally play as a batter in the side and that is very important for the team’s balance.’’

After a disappointing season in the abridged version of the game, Indian coach John Wright is bullish on his team’s chances in the forthcoming series against Pakistan. ‘‘It will be a tight series but Pakistan inspires the side to motivate itself to perform better.’’

He refused to believe that Pakistan would be much tougher to face because they have returned from a tour of Australia. ‘‘I wonder if they can take confidence from the losses that they suffered in Australia. I don’t think so.’’
