US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that Denmark has failed to deal with what he called a “Russian threat” to Greenland, adding that the United States would now take action.

“NATO has been telling Denmark for 20 years that you have to get the Russian threat away from Greenland,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social . “Unfortunately, Denmark has been unable to do anything about it. Now it is time, and it will be done!!!”

Trump has repeatedly said he wants the United States to take control of Greenland, an autonomous territory that is part of the Kingdom of Denmark.

The White House, Denmark’s foreign ministry and the Danish presidency of the European Union did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Leaders in both Denmark and Greenland have rejected Trump’s remarks, saying the island is not for sale and that Greenlanders do not want to become part of the United States.

On Saturday, Trump threatened to impose escalating tariffs on European allies unless Washington is allowed to buy Greenland.

Trump has argued that growing Chinese and Russian activity in the Arctic makes Greenland critical to US security. Danish and other European officials have said the island is already protected under NATO’s collective defence agreement.
