Tytler summoned in forgery case

Tytler dismissed the allegations, stating that this was a ploy during the election year.

A city court on Friday summoned Congress leader Jagdish Tytler on charges of cheating, conspiracy and corruption in a forgery case. He is to appear before court on September 30.

The court issued the summons while taking cognizance of a 16-page chargesheet submitted by the CBI,which charged Tytler and controversial arms dealer Abhishek Verma for forging a letter addressed to the Prime Minister to wrongfully assure a telecom firm of visa extension in the country in 2009. According to the CBIs chargesheet, the forgery was done in active connivance with Tytler. Tytler dismissed the allegations, stating that this was a ploy during the election year.

The chargesheet states that the letter was forged on the letterhead of Ajay Maken, the then Minister of State for Home, and given to the telecom firm with the purpose of wrongfully assuring them of visa extension in India. Verma had allegedly used the letter to flaunt his influence in the power corridor and demanded one million dollars from the firm in exchange. But money did not exchange hands,a CBI official said.
