The ‘sakht launda’ softens: Why Zakir Khan’s 5-year break is a victory for self-preservation

He later hinted that the decision was final through his Instagram Stories, writing after landing in Dubai, “Every show is a celebration till June 20. I won’t be able to come to many cities this time, so please make a little extra effort and come to the shows.”

Stand-up comedian Zakir Khan has announced that he is taking a long break from comedy to focus on his health. Khan made the announcement during a recent show in Hyderabad, where a video clip of him addressing the audience has gone viral, creating a stir among his fans. From the stage, Zakir said, “I’m going on a long, long break. Probably till 2028–29, or even 2030. It will be a break of three, four, or five years to take care of my health and to sort out a few other things.” Expressing gratitude, he added, “Everyone present here right now is very close to my heart. Your presence means more to me than you can imagine.”

He later hinted that the decision was final through his Instagram Stories, writing after landing in Dubai, “Every show is a celebration till June 20. I won’t be able to come to many cities this time, so please make a little extra effort and come to the shows.”

The physical cost of constant touring

Zakir spoke openly about his health struggles earlier as well. Last year, he revealed that he had been unwell for over a year but continued working.  Describing the demands of his routine, he added, “Trying to satisfy everyone you meet, doing two to three shows in a day, sleepless nights, early morning flights, and no fixed timetable for meals. I’ve been unwell for a year, but I had to work because it felt important at the time.”

Khan’s sabbatical has yet again stirred the never-ending debate on hustle culture. According to S Giriprasad, Psychologist at Aster Whitefield Hospital, repeated performance with little recovery places sustained stress on the body. He explains that this can lead to musculoskeletal injuries, including chronic back pain, joint problems, tendonitis, and vocal strain. Poor sleep and irregular meals disrupt hormone balance, digestion, immunity, and metabolic function, increasing vulnerability to fatigue, infections, and long-term complications such as insulin resistance or cardiovascular strain.

Burnout, loneliness, and the need to pause

Stressing that mental health is equally affected, Giriprasad says, “Chronic touring disturbs natural circadian patterns, social relations, and emotional equilibrium.” The pressure of constant travel and performance may contribute to anxiety, irritability, and emotional exhaustion. He also points to loneliness as one of the most disturbing outcomes of touring, noting that it often contradicts a performer’s public visibility while making sustained relationships difficult.

Zakir acknowledged reaching a breaking point, saying, “I absolutely love being on stage, but I’ll have to take a break now. I didn’t want to, and I’ve been ignoring this for a year. But now I feel that before it’s too late, I should take the break.” He also shared that after recording his current special, he has been advised to go on a long break.

On whether such a long sabbatical can help, Giriprasad explains that breaks can be effective if used intentionally. A long pause allows the nervous system to rebalance, inflammation to settle, and emotional reserves to recharge. However, he cautions that recovery requires conscious effort through proper sleep, regular meals, emotional support, and physical care.

Zakir Khan’s decision highlights a reality often overlooked in high-performance careers: prolonged sleep deprivation and erratic eating eventually demand a cost. His sabbatical serves as a reminder that stepping back is sometimes the most necessary step forward.
