The first group of 72 of over 200 Indians rescued from the Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia, which hit a rock and sank off the Tuscan coast in Italy last week, returned home on Thursday.
Of these,12 arrived at Delhi,38 flew to Mumbai, nine each to Chennai and Hyderabad, three at Bangalore and one in Kolkata,an official from the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs said. The remaining rescued Indians will be flown back home on Friday, the official said.
It was a seven-day cruise on a designated path, and if anyone tried to tamper with the route of the auto-pilot,it raised an alarm. No one knows if the Captain was bored or he wanted to take the liner towards the shore. He manoeuvred the path manually and the tail-end of the ship hit a rock. What then became of it was something we have seen in the Titanic, recalled Surjan Singh Kandari,a survivor and resident of Uttarakhand.
The survivors were given 1,000 Euros each by the Indian Embassy. The embassy also made arrangements for their travel back to the country.
There were 203 Indians on board Costa Concordia, and 202 of them were rescued. One decided to stay back in Italy. While 201 Indians will be returning to the country, one Russel Rabello is missing.
The Indian survivors said that Captain Francesco Schettino manually manoeuvred the route of the ship, and held him responsible for the mishap. with PTI
