Minister too large

Meddling,as in Paes-Bhupathi mess, makes Maken look like cabinets new Mamata Banerjee

Meddling,as in Paes-Bhupathi mess, makes Maken look like cabinets new Mamata Banerjee

Its not known whether Sports Minister Ajay Maken has a single-handed tennis backhand or if he prefers the deuce or advantage side of the court when playing doubles. What is known about him apart from the fact that his interests include Net surfing,sci-fi movies, old songs and non-fiction books source: india.gov.in is that he can question the collective tennis IQ of the All India Tennis Associations selection committee. A panel, which includes Rohit Rajpal,Zeeshan Ali,Sai Jayalakshmi national champions, all; past Davis Cup winner Jaideep Mukherjee and non-playing captain of the national squad S.P. Misra, considered Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi Indias best bet at the Olympics. Maken has questioned the choice and hinted at splitting the friends-turned-foes by sending two teams to London. Mathematically, two have more of a chance of winning a medal than one,but sporting equations of probability dont work quite like that.

Over the years, across sports, selectors and players have disagreed. But pullout threats, the kind Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna have wielded, that too at the Olympics, arent healthy. Certainly, players should not be encouraged to behave like ransom seekers. Equally, ministers must not start acting as their messengers. Makens knack of speaking out of turn remember, the F1 item girl quote and meddling in affairs that are best left to those more qualified exemplified in the controlling urge showcased in the sports bill he attempted to pilot through Parliament last year may end up making him the cabinets new Mamata Banerjee.

It is these unwanted interventions that make national sporting federations, chiefly BCCI,wary of the sports bill and the sports ministrys intentions. Maken asserts that the ministry is entitled to answers as AITA avails itself of government funding. In the present context, this is a petty argument made worse by its crude tone. AITA needs to do two things: ask Bhupathi to mind his side of the court and tell Maken to first take tennis lessons.
