MARUTI SUZUKI India Ltd will invest Rs 35,000 crore to set up its second automobile manufacturing facility in Gujarat at Khoraj industrial estate in Sanand. When commissioned, it will be the fifth in the country after the three in Haryana and one in Gujarat’s Hansalpur village.

The facility will manufacture a total 10 lakh cars in a year, a government statement issued on Saturday said. The handing-over ceremony of the investment letter was organised in Gandhinagar in the presence of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Managing Director and CEO, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, Hisashi Takeuchi.

The plant which will come up on 1,750 acres acquired by the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) is located close to the Mandal Becharaji Special Investment Region (MBSIR), which has Gujarat’s first Maruti plant in Hansalpur village. An MoU regarding this project was signed at the Vibrant Gujarat summit in 2024.

Under this project, four plants, each having an annual production capacity of 2.5 lakh cars, will come up in the area, the first of which will begin production by 2029, the statement said.

The release said the new Maruti plant would generate potential employment opportunities for “more than 12,000 people” and “7.5 lakh indirect employment opportunities from ancillary units and MSMEs.”

Chief Minister Patel said that this is not merely a new automobile manufacturing facility, “but also an important step towards further strengthening the country’s largest and most competitive automobile manufacturing corridor.”

Maruti Suzuki Motors MD Shri Hisashi Takeuchi was quoted as saying, “Gujarat is emerging as a leader in mobility transformation, from which Maruti Suzuki has also benefited.”

He added that through a strong partnership with the Gujarat government, “Maruti Suzuki is keen to actively contribute to the Make in India initiative through its manufacturing units in the state.”

Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi and Maruti Suzuki’s Whole Time Director and executive committee member Sunil Kakkar were also present on this occasion.

In 2012, as the then chief minister, Prime Minister Narendra Modi invited Maruti Suzuki to invest in Gujarat following which Maruti’s first plant in Gujarat is operational at Hansalpur.

This plant now produces 7.50 lakh cars per year, and a plan has been firmed up to increase this by 2.50 lakh cars to reach a production of 10 lakh units per year by the 2026-27 financial year, the statement said.
