With thousands of party workers laying siege to the state Secretariat, the Opposition LDF on Monday began its indefinite agitation demanding the resignation Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and judicial probe into solar panel scam.
The stir prompted the Congress-led UDF government to declare a holiday for the Secretariat for the next two days. Chandy met the UDF leaders and exuded confidence that the agitation would end within three days.
As the holidays are expected to calm the situation, the UDF would explore possibilities of discussions with the LDF leaders. There are indications that the UDF would accede to the LDF demand for the judicial probe.
Earlier in the day,Chandy said the government would announce a judicial probe only after the ongoing police probe into the solar panel scam was over. He said the police would submit chargesheets by Friday. LDF activists had threatened to block all four gates to the Secretariat, but the police ensured smooth entry of the ministers and the staff. Chandy and other ministers entered the Secretariat heavy police escort.
After reviewing the law and order situation in a Cabinet meeting,Chandy met Governor Nikhil Kumar and apprised him of the stir.
Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan said the Secretariat reported 67 per cent attendance. Violence could be averted as the police maintained utmost restraint. The government was ready for talks, but it is up to the LDF to decide, said Radhakrishnan.
Thousands of workers, drawn from across Kerala, have been camping near the Secretariat since Sunday night. The LDF said they would stay in Thiruvananthapuram for next five days until next batch takes turn at the siege.
Kerala CPM secretary Pinarayi Vijayan said 30,000 people were taking part in the agitation and more would join in the coming days.
