Ex-Puducherry CM quits Cong

The Congress in Punducherry suffered a blow.

The Congress in Punducherry suffered a blow on Thursday as its former chief minister N Rangasamy resigned as MLA,despite efforts to keep him in the party ahead of the Assembly polls in May.

Rangasamy was forced to step down as chief minister in 2008 due to intra-party wrangling. He was keeping away from party activities since.

Even as late as Wednesday, the Congress had been trying to bring Rangasamy around, deputing senior leader M Krishnasswamy and PCC chief A V Subramanian to talk to him. He made demands like announcing himself as the CM candidate in the coming elections, conditions that the Congress cannot accede to, a senior leader from Puducherry said. The leader admitted his departure would hurt the Congress in the coming polls.

There has been talk of Rangasamy launching a new outfit, and it gathered strength after a recent meeting where his supporters decided to merge outfits launched in his name.
