Composer-singer Shafqat Amanat Ali on the song that touches his heart
I was 10 when I first heard the composition Tere bina zindagi se. It touched my heart. Sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar in the film Aandhi,it is one of the most beautiful numbers I have ever heard. It is one of those few songs I sang in music competitions when I was young. Wherever I have sung itbe it at a small competition or any of my concertsI have always been appreciated.
The very soft and romantic number is musically stunning. Its melody is astonishingly rich and its tune by RD Burman matches perfectly with Gulzarsaabs almost-mystical lyrics. They translate into the feeling that I may not need you,but life is definitely not life without you.
Lovely, subtle words that express a beautiful thought. The lines,Jee mein aata hai, tere daaman mein, sar jhuka ke ham rote rahe, teri bhi aankhon mein, aansuo ki nami to nahi are beautiful.
Though the song sounds effortless and simple,if you look at its technical depth, the notes are extremely difficult to master. Also, the song has been filmed against a gloomy backdrop of a ruined historical monument on Sanjeev Kumar and Aparna Sen. They dont sync the song. It runs in the backdrop and yet it showcases the pain the two protagonists are feeling.
I have always been a sensitive person and I remember crying whenever I heard this song during my college days. I have an LP,a cassette and a CD of the song too.
