43 killed in 2 HP accidents

SHIMLA: Forty-three people,including 34 members of a marriage party,were killed and eight injured in two separate accidents in Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh. Transport Minister Mohinder Singh said a truck carrying 40 members of a marriage party rolled into a 500-metre gorge near Sherhpur Wednesday night. In another accident,nine persons were killed when a pick-up van fell into a ditch near Bharmaur.

Hema Malini elected to Rajya Sabha

BANGALORE: Hema Malini was on Thursday elected to the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka as all 106 BJP legislators fell in line with a party whip and voted for her. Her only rival K Marulasidappa,a noted writer,fielded as an Independent candidate by the Congress and the JDS.

NEW DELHI: HRD Minister Kapil Sibal Thursday inaugurated the e-certificate for the UGC-NET candidates. These e-certificates will cut down the time lag for issuing NET certificates from 6-8 months to 6 days. These e-certificates will also be verifiable for authenticity in just 24 hours as against the earlier four months.

Attack on Rita house: BSP MLA arrested

LUCKNOW: Nearly 20 after the attack on UP Congress chief Rita Joshi8217;s house in Lucknow,the police Thursday arrested BSP MLA Jitendra Singh Babloo and BSP leader Intizar Abdi. The arrests came at a time when Rita8217;s plea seeking a CBI probe into the attack is in the final stage before the Allahabad High court. BSP supporters had attacked Rita8217;s house on July 15,2009,following her alleged derogatory remarks against the CM Mayawati.
