Aamir Khan stepped out in the city on Thursday to vote in the BMC 2026 elections and while speaking to the media stationed outside one of the polling booths, Aamir urged everyone to vote. He chose to address the audience in Marathi, and was then asked to repeat his message in Hindi. This particular incident has caught the attention of netizens as it comes amid a language row in the state. While some saw the irony of the situation as a citizen in Maharashtra was being asked to repeat his message in Hindi, others said that since Aamir is an actor in Hindi films, he shouldn’t have hesitated to speak in Hindi

After addressing the audience in Marathi, Aamir was asked to repeat his message in Hindi and the actor said, “Hindi mein? Yeh Maharashtra hai bhai. (In Hindi? This is Maharashtra.)” Aamir was told that his message would be shown across the country. He then spoke in Hindi and praised the BMC for their arrangements at the poll booth and urged others to come out and vote.

One netizen said, “He is talking in a sarcastic way.” Another one wrote, “Some people don’t even get his sarcasm😂.” The naysayers also took to the comments section and one of them wrote, “So why does he make a film in Hindi?”

Previously, Aamir had shared that although he learnt Marathi in school, he did not really know the language. He hired a tutor when he was 44 and learnt the language after living in Maharashtra all of his life. He said in an interview in 2025, “When I was around 44, I realised that I do not know the Marathi language. Although Marathi is taught in school, I did not pay much attention. I felt that it was a matter of shame that I did not know my Rajyabhasha. Then, I hired a Marathi teacher and I learned Marathi from him. Now, I am able to speak decent Marathi.”

Aamir was last seen in Sitaare Zameen Par in 2025. This year, the actor is looking forward to the release of his productions, Vir Das-starrer Happy Patel Khatarnaak Jasoos and Sai Pallavi and Junaid Khan-starrer Ek Din. He is also producing Sunny Deol-starrer Lahore 1947. Aamir will also be starring in Lokesh Kanagaraj’s upcoming film.

Maharashtra civic polls

Elections took place on Thursday for the Maharashtra municipal corporation elections, with candidates across 29 civic bodies in the state in fray. The results in the elections will be announced on Friday. Voting took place for all the municipal bodies in the state, including Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). Bollywood actors were seen casting their votes including Akshay Kumar, Ranbir Kapoor, Gulzar, Twinkle Khanna, Nana Patekar and Vishal Dadlani, among many others.

Language row in Maharashtra

The language row began during the BMC elections in Maharashtra after BJP leader Kripashankar Singh said a Hindi-speaking person can become Mumbai’s Mayor. While the Thackerays — Raj and Uddhav — reacted strongly to the statement, asking Marathi manoos to ‘unite for Mumbai’,  Maharashtra chief minister, Devendra Fadnavis stood up for non-Marathi residents, saying they were very much a part of city’s fabric.
