Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday said people voted for the BJP-led Mahayuti in polls to 29 municipal corporations in the state as they wanted honesty and development. The Mahayuti is set to attain power in 25 out of 29 municipal corporations, including Mumbai, he said at a celebratory rally here.
"BJP offered a developmental agenda. We put it before the people and they responded positively. We have received a record-breaking mandate in many municipal corporations and it underscores that people want honesty and development. That is why people voted for the BJP," Fadnavis said.
The Mahayuti has broken all records in the civic polls, he added.
Reacting to Mahayuti’s big win in Maharashtra civic body polls, Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on X: “Thank you Maharashtra! The dynamic people of the state bless the NDA’s agenda of pro-people good governance! The results of various municipal corporation elections indicate that NDA’s bond with the people of Maharashtra has further deepened."
"Our track record and vision for development have struck a chord. My gratitude to the people across Maharashtra. This is a vote to add momentum to progress and celebrate the glorious culture the state is associated with,” he added.

While the counting is on its last leg in Nagpur, the Congress won the highest number of seats in the Chandrapur Municipal Corporation election.
During the celebrations in Chandrapur, Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar said, "The Congress secured a historic victory in the Chandrapur Municipal Corporation elections, winning 27 of the 66 seats and effectively hoisting the party’s tricolour over the civic body. The people have rejected the BJP’s failed and anti-people administration." adding that "the result is still awaited in one Ward 17."
Reacting to the victory, Wadettiwar said the BJP had been rejected due to its corrupt policies in the municipal corporation, hollow promises and arrogance of power. “The people of Chandrapur have once again placed their trust in the Congress for development, transparency and public welfare,” he said.
He said public anger against the BJP had been building due to several issues. “The people have delivered a clear verdict against the BJP in this election,” he added.
Considering these numbers, a Congress mayor will be elected and the party will form the civic administration in Chandrapur, Wadettiwar said. Celebrations were held at the Congress office and across the city after the victory, with workers expressing their joy to the beat of drums. Citizens, too, said they believed Chandrapur’s development was possible only under Congress leadership.
Congratulating the newly elected corporators, Wadettiwar said, “This victory is not for power, but for responsibility. The Congress is committed to providing transparent, clean and people-oriented administration in the Chandrapur Municipal Corporation. Every issue faced by citizens will be given priority,” he assured the people of Chandrapur.— Ankita Deshkar reports

Counting of votes polled in elections to 29 municipal corporations across Maharashtra began on Friday morning, with the spotlight firmly on Mumbai, where the BJP-led Mahayuti bloc is engaged in a high-stakes contest with the reunited Thackeray cousins for control of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, India’s richest civic body.
Polling for 2,869 seats across 893 wards in the 29 civic corporations, including 227 seats in Mumbai, was held on Thursday. A total of 15,931 candidates are contesting these elections, which saw participation from 3.48 crore eligible voters across the state.
The Maharashtra State Election Commission has yet not released the official poll percentage of polling held in 29 Municipal Corporations on Thursday. This will be for the first time that the counting will begin without the release of official poll percentage. The counting will begin at 10 AM.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections held on Thursday were marred by a significant controversy following allegations over the use of "indelible" ink to mark voters' fingers.
Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray, leaders of Shiv Sena UBT and MNS, respectively, claimed the indelible ink used can be easily removed.
However, the State Election Commission (SEC) denied these claims, stating the ink is of good quality and hard to remove.
Maharashtra State Election Commissioner DT Waghmare firmly rejected allegations of irregularities realted the indelible ink used in the ongoing Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Elections 2026, asserting that there was no wrongdoing in the polling process. He responded to concerns raised by opposition leaders that the allegedly erasable ink was being used, and said there was a deliberate attempt to create confusion.
