Open market sale of wheat till June-end

NEW DELHI: The Empowered Group of Ministers EGoM headed by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee is learnt to have decided to extend the open market sale scheme OMSS to sell wheat and rice from government stocks till September end to ease the food inflation. The OMSS,which was recently extended till June-end,will now continue till the end of Monsoons. However,the EGoM,which met on Friday,reportedly deferred a decision on a proposal to enhance the minimum quota of food grains for above poverty line APL families from 10 kg to 15 kg per family per month for another six months.

Poll expenses: EC notice to 15 parties

NEW DELHI: The BJP,RJD and JDS are among 15 political parties served show-cause notices by the Election Commission for their failure to furnish election expenses to the poll panel within 90 days of declaration of results. The political parties have been asked to furnish their reply by April 29,according to the notice served on them on April 16. Jharkhand Mukti Morcha,All India Forward Bloc,Pattali Makkal Katchi,are among other parties that have been served with the notice. So far,31 political parties have submitted their statement of expenses to it.

Hyderabad riots: BJP wants judicial probe

NEW DELHI: The BJP has demanded a judicial inquiry into the recent Hyderabad riots,and said that Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen was involved in violence there,which was aimed at changing the demographic profile of the city. There was an attempt to intimidate a section of people to vacate the properties with an objective to occupy or buy them at throw-away prices. This is reportedly one of the reasons for the flare up of riots in the old city area, said the report prepared by a BJP fact-finding committee that visited the strife-torn localities. The team submitted its report to BJP president Nitin Gadkari on Friday.

Hisar violence: SHO suspended

NEW DELHI: Dalit girl Suman and her father Tara Chand,who were burnt to death during an inter-caste clash at Mirchpur village in Haryanas Hisar district on April 21,were cremated on Friday evening under strict police vigil. Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda,meanwhile,announced the suspension of Narnaund SHO Vinod Kajal. Kajal,along with the Hisar Tehsildar,has been booked under IPC Section 120 b for criminal conspiracy. SP Subhash Yadav said 25 of the 43 Jats accused in the FIR have been arrested.

SC notice to 10 DMK leaders in assets case

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday issued notices to 10 DMK leaders,including five Tamil Nadu ministers,accused of amassing disproportionate assets. It was acting on petitions challenging their acquittal by trial courts in the state. A Bench comprising Justices Markandeya Katju and A K Patnaik sought a response from the DMK members on the petitions filed by three AIADMK leaders. The petitions challenged a Madras High Court decision which dismissed their revision petition against the discharge by trial courts.

Rajya Sabha revokes suspension of LJP MP

NEW DELHI: The Rajya Sabha on Friday revoked the suspension of LJP member Sabir Ali,almost one-and-a-half months after he was punished along with six other members for indulging in unruly behaviour when the House took up the Womens Reservation Bill. The motion for terminating the suspension of Ali,the lone LJP member,was moved by Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Prithviraj Chavan.

Malayalam actor found dead

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Noted Malayalam film and serial actor Sreenath was found dead in a hotel room at Kothamangalam in Ernakulam on Friday morning. His death was suspected to be an act of suicide as his wrist vein was found slit,said police. Sreenath was in his early 50s.
