The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) began operating a seventh train on the Yellow Line of Namma Metro Thursday, coinciding with the harvest festival of Makar Sankranti.
With the addition, train frequency on the Yellow Line—serving commuters to Electronic City, a major IT hub in Southeast Bengaluru—has improved from 13 minutes to 10 minutes during peak hours, BMRCL said.
According to BMRCL, peak-hour services will now run every 10 minutes on weekdays, up from the earlier 13-minute interval. On Sundays, peak-hour frequency will improve slightly, from 15 minutes to 14 minutes.
“With the addition of this train, Metro services on the Yellow Line will witness improved frequency during peak hours, offering greater convenience to commuters. There will be no change in the first and last train timings from either terminal station, RV Road and Bommasandra, on all days,” BMRCL said.
On December 23, 2025, BMRCL added the sixth train to the Yellow Line, increasing weekday frequency from 15 to 13 minutes. The fifth train had been added on November 1, 2025, when the headway on the line was reduced from 19 minutes to 15 minutes.
The much-awaited Yellow Line services were opened on August 10, 2025, with three train sets.
A traffic police study last year found that the Yellow Line reduced congestion in the region by 37 per cent.
At present, 96.1 km of the Bengaluru Metro network is operational, with long-term plans to expand it to 317 km. In 2026, the operational length is expected to increase by 41.01 km to 137.11 km with the opening of sections of the Pink Line.
The Reach-6 line from Kalena Agrahara to Tavarekere — an elevated 7.5-km stretch with six stations — is slated to open in May 2026. The 13.76-km underground section from Dairy Circle to Nagawara, featuring 12 stations, is planned for commissioning in December 2026.
Phase 2A of the Pink Line, running 19.75 km from Central Silk Board to Krishnarajapura along the Outer Ring Road with 13 elevated stations, is also scheduled to open in December 2026. Phase 2B, from Hebbal to Kempegowda International Airport (27 km), is expected to open in June 2027, while the 11-km stretch from Hebbal to Krishnarajapura is slated to open in December 2027.
By 2027, the operational Bengaluru Metro network is projected to expand to 175.55 km.
