At least 20 persons,most of them college and school students,were killed and 15 injured,when a private bus skidded off the road and rolled down into a 120-m deep gorge near Puranidhar in Sangrah tehsil of Sirmaur district,about 200 km from Shimla.
The bus HP 55 7274,belonging to Chauhan Travels,carrying 35 passengers,was on its way from Puranidhar to Solan when the mishap took place. Sirmaur SP Sumedha Dwivedi said,all the bodies have been recovered.
DGP B Kamal Kumar said,Twenty deaths have been confirmed. The injured have been shifted to government hospital in Solan where the condition of a few is stated to be critical. Driver of the bus Virender 32 was among those killed.
Some of the injured informed that the accident took place when the driver lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a sharp curb at Bharari. He had only one hand on the steering and was throwing an empty water bottle out of the window with the other when he lost control of the bus, the DGP said. A police case has been registered and investigations are on,he added.
District administration announced Rs 10,000 to the next of kin of dead as immediate relief and Rs 5,000 each to injured. It also promised free treatment to the injured.
