January 11: Willingdon Catholic Gymkhana WCG defeated eight-strong Rajput XI 5-3 in the Bombay Hockey Association-conducted First Division League at the Mahindra Stadium, Churchgate, today.

Gavin Vandrine, besides scoring two goals for the losers, played his heart out but his best could not prevent Rajput from going down. R Fernandes was the other scorer for Rajput.

WCG could have scored more than five times but their forwards muffed some easy chances. Troy Miranda 2, Dominic 2 and Manish netted for WCG.Earlier, Khalsa beat Village Amboli 2-1 in Pool B of the Third Division. Mayuresh Shelar and Allan Fernandes scored for the winners and Everest Gonsalves did likewise for the losers.

There will be no matches at this venue on Monday.

USC champs: United Services Club USC became the new holders of the Grover Vineyard Trophy, the symbol of supremacy in the Inter-Club golf which saw the cream of Mumbai and Pune players in action at the par 70 United Services Club course, which was in good shape, over the weekend. Organised by Bunkers, the event saw United Servics gain the distinction by beating Bombay Presidency Golf Club by 15pts to 7 pts in the Ryder Cup format of play.

In the tussle for the third and fourth places Poona Club got the better of Willingdon Sports Club last year8217;s champion by 15.5 pts to 11 pts.

Etambe moves up: Second-seeded National champion Nagsen Etambe defeated seventh seed Mahendra Tambe 23-25, 25-28, 25-16 to make the open singles semi-finals of the first Maharashtra State Ranking carrom tournament at the Mukand Sports Club, Kalwe, today.
