ROOPNAGAR, DEC 5: A war memorial has been constructed by the Punjab Department of Architecture and the Roopnagar district Sainik Welfare Board at the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Park here to immortalise the memory of war heroes who made the supreme sacrifice.
Every structure in the park 8212; a bridge, water body or proposed bronze statue of Maharaja Ranjit Singh 8212; has been conceived as a memorial.
Costing about Rs 20 lakh, the memorial, situated on the banks of the Sutlej, has been designed in red sandstone and white marble, the two colours denote the sacrifice and purity of those who laid down their lives.
The circular structure of the memorial has been divided into 12 sections, one each for the 12 Sikh misls armed militia, with inscriptions on granite stone highlighting the actions of each misl. At the centre of the structure is a mast, symbolising unifying force.
The foundation stone of the memorial was laid down by Punjab Finance Minister Capt Kanwaljit Singh on April 24, 1998.
The park, which was inaugurated by the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on June 28, 1997, is also being developed. Care was taken not to cut a single tree, but to integrate them into the development scheme.
Then Deputy Commissioner Vini Mahajan had played a key role in the development of the park.
