VADODARA, June 2: Unruly scenes marred the first day of distribution of forms at the faculty of Commerce, with agitated students breaking window-panes and benches at the faculty here on Wednesday.
While the students went on a rampage saying that the university should accommodate all the students who have passed out this year, Vice-Chancellor of MSU Anil Kane stuck to his stand while assuring students that he would admit as many students as possible.
When asked how he could accommodate more than 5,000 students 8212; the capacity of the faculty 8212; Kane said that he would accommodate only those students who qualified in the merit list. The students however demand that if there are 7,000 students then that many would have to be admitted.
They added, 8220;We do not have any objection to admissions by the merit list system.8221; However, the administration should see to it that the cut-off was brought down to 45 percent like last year, they said. They added that since this year there was a high pass percent, the number of applicants would also be more.
8220;How the university manages is not our lookout,8221; they said. If the administration had thought of granting administration to 5,000 students then their demand would be to admit 6,000 students, they warned.
The students said that their only contention was that all the students, especially those from the city have to be admitted and there would be no compromise on that.
Kane however said that he would not go beyond the capacity of the faculty. 8220;But I will see to it that all the students who deserve to get admissions are not denied and those who do not fit into the percent criteria are not allowed,8221; he said.
The students meanwhile submitted a memorandum to the V-C on Wednesday. In the morning before the violence started as many as 1,100 forms were distributed in the faculty. Faculty dean J K Syan said that the distribution procedure would continue till June 15 at the faculty office between 9 am-12 noon. Interested applicants would have to collect forms after paying Rs 40.
