VADODARA, Nov 24: Two students of the Faculty of Science were reportedly beaten up by the police in the campus on Tuesday for abusing teachers and misbehaving with a few faculty students.

The students had approached the faculty Dean Bonny Pilo for his permission to conduct a `musical morning’, organised every year as part of a welcoming ceremony for freshers. Opinions apparently differed over the timing of the programme, with the authorities refusing to permit it in the morning, and the students adamant on not organising it in the afternoon.

“Instead of accepting the authorities’ decision, the student leaders went into the classes, abused the teachers and pulled many students out of the classes to add strength to their representation”, Pilo told Express Newsline.

A faculty union leader said, “Though faculty authorites are ready to permit the programme in the afternoon, no student will stay behind to attend it at the time suggested by the authorities, as they finish their classes and practicals long before that”.

To that argument, Pilo retorted, “We cannot allow the students to host scuh programmes in the morning and disturb the schedule of the classes. We’ve already said that we’ll arrange for the freshers to stay behind”.

Following the disagreement, Pilo said, the security was called in, who in turn, informed the police. He admitted that students had been beaten up “as the students had been seen abusing the teachers and pulling out students from classes”.

When contacted, Sayajigunj police inspector P P Mukul refused to comment on the incident.
