The Election Commission of India (ECI) Thursday appointed Anindita Mitra, a 2007 batch IAS officer, as Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Punjab, replacing Sibin C, who is proceeding on central deputation.
Rahul Sharma, Principal Secretary, ECI, made a communication in this regard to K A P Sinha, Chief Secretary, Punjab, in a letter dated January 15. The ECI letter asked Sinha to ensure that Anindita Mitra assumes charge of the office of the CEO, Punjab, immediately. This has to be sent to the Commission within a week, it said.
A copy of the Commission’s notification appointing Anindita Mitra as the Chief Electoral Officer, Punjab, was sent to Sinha, requesting that it may be re-published in the state gazette.
The Punjab Government had furnished a panel of three IAS officers for the post of the state chief electoral officer.
Anindita Mitra holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Computer Science from Guru Ghasidas University, Bilaspur (Chhattisgarh). She cleared the UPSC Civil Services Examination in 2006 (results declared in 2007), securing All India Rank 8, and topping among women candidates that year.
She has held several important positions in Punjab and on deputation. She served as Municipal Commissioner of Chandigarh from August 2021 to August 2024. During this period, she also held roles, including as CEO of Chandigarh Smart City, and focused on Swachh Bharat initiatives, safai workers’ welfare, and urban development.
She currently serves as the Administrative Secretary for Higher Education and Languages, and, additionally, for School Education in the Government of Punjab. She also holds an additional charge as Managing Director, Punjab Infrastructure Development Board.
